About this deal

in 1934 Masataka established Nikka Whisky, and built its first distillery in Yoichi, Hokkaido, which-- though inconveniently located -- he had always considered to be the ideal site in Japan for whisky-making, similar in many ways to the Scottish town where he had studied. They are distilled in copper pot stills and matured in a variety of cask types - including ex-bourbon, ex-sherry and even mizunara. Born into a family of sake brewers hs path into whisky distilling came via a chemistry degree in Glasgow followed by apprenticeships at Scotch Whisky distilleries in the years following the First World War.

Please always read the labels, warnings, and directions provided with the product before using or consuming a product. Yoichi (in Hokkaido) was chosen because of it was deemed to be similar in climate to Scotland, where Nikka’s founder Masataka Taketsuru trained. Taketsuru then joins the Kotobukiya group, a beer industry giant later renamed Suntory, for who he builds the first Japanese distillery in 1924. It offers a delicate balance of bright fruitiness and rich mouthfeel, along with its distinctive smokiness generated by coal-fired distillation. You are responsible for the accuracy of the information you provide to us in relation to your account, and for updating it where necessary. The whisky gets its distinct aroma and body from direct heating distillation, in which the pot stills are heated with finely powdered natural coal--the traditional method that is hardly ever used today, even in Scotland. The location for the Miyagikyo distillery was selected because of its clean air, just the right humidity for storage, and abundant underground water filtered through a layer of peat. In anticipation of Nikka Whisky’s 90th Anniversary, the series offers an inside look at the various experiments in the whisky-making process that Nikka has practiced over the years. From the arid plantations on the edge of the Mexican desert, through the rugged glens of the Scottish Highlands, to the undulating vineyards of Cognac in Southwest France, successive generations have been distilling the fermented liquor of agave, barley, grape, cane sugar and other fruits, plants and grains.
