I think the portrayals of each of the characters brought them to life in a very vivid way and I liked the many ways in which they all helped Max to think about the consequences of his actions as he experimented with using his newly-discovered magic powers. Then a run-in with Bottley at his parents’ market stall gets Max into even bigger trouble – now the notorious East End gangsters the Crayfish Twins are after him! A real strength of the story is that a child is encouraged to believe that problems can be overcome, particularly when you have the support of a loving family and good friends . Stephen Mulhern knows all about how to do magic, so he is writing what he knows, but with an exciting magic adventure.Max finds a chest with a top hat like magicians wear, when Max, puts the hat on, he instantly has magic powers.
