About this deal

When cutting, fabric scissors are great for small curves and cutting details with tight angles. On the other hand, rotary cutter is perfect for cutting long straight lines and wide curves. Price: Fabric scissors are more economical in the long term. Only require sharpening at home or professionally once or twice a year. Rotary blades can’t be sharpened, and continuously replacing blades on the cutter is pricey. For almost all types of trimming and cutting jobs, fabric scissors are considered the gold standard. They work well for cutting out tight curves and straight lines in any fabric. Generally, rotary cutters speed up the process and make cutting pieces faster. However, different kit pieces are involved – not only a strong ruler and pattern weight, but also cutting mat with replacement blades. I already had the Stihl RG-KM connected to a KM131R power head. I was curious about the Stens, so I bought one to compare. Short answer: they both work great, but with some tradeoffs.

That aside, the Sten cuts great. It is very loud, and draws a fair amount of power. It has counter-rotating blades, but the bottom blade has the most exposed surface to the grass, so it will still lay down some material and miss cutting. A couple of swings cleans it up. Also the spinnig blads will spark if you bump into concrete (like the edge of a driveway). If you have a lawn you want to keep immaculate, then the Rotocut would be a good choice to add to your arsenal of attachments for the EGO MultiTool. When you’re using rotary cutter, you won’t have to pin down pattern piece in the fabric similar to scissors – rather, it would be good to make use of pattern weights. Save you a lot of time as you’re simply able to place these on the top of fabric and pattern piece then cut. The Stens is cheaper, and parts are available at a known cost. It is loud and soaks up a lot of power. btw I oil the blades of these units before and after I use them. I suspect that the Stens will quiet down as I use it more.Depending on whether you’re cutting fabric, thread, or paper, there’s a pair of scissors that is perfect for your needs. That said, some scissors are designed specifically for certain crafts. For example, embroidery scissors are designed with small, intricate thread-snipping in mind; consequently, their blades and tips are smaller and often more precision-oriented than those on other scissors. If you’re unsure about the type of scissor to buy, or you anticipate using a single set of scissors across a smattering of craft types, consider a pair of general craft scissors, like Scotch Precision Scissors, which are designed for cutting fabric, paper, and more. So, the Stihl costs more, cuts better, uses less power, and comes with a shaft. It is configured for a Kombi engine, but I suspect that it could probably be fitted to a Stihl with a 1" shaft.

Caveat: I hate string trimmers. I use a Badger-head with poly blades for light stuff, and the largest Stihl poly head for big growth. That huge swath really speeds things up. It is faster than my clearing saw for everything but saplings. It did what it was designed for very well. The high-strength alloy steel blades have a 23cm cutting width and run at 450rpm cutting speed. Speed: Rotary cutter is must faster than scissors, but without much practice it can easily cause serious injuries.Fabric scissors are simple to use, classic, are relatively affordable and don’t require frequent replacement if you’ve kept the edges sharp. They’re really great for freehand cutting, and they’re a lot better for small and finely detailed pieces compared to the rotary cutters. Scissors are frequently used so you won’t need to get familiar with it like you would with relatively new tools such as rotary cutters. And it is a lot less expensive compared to rotary cutters.

High-quality scissors can last for years of crafting. Elements pertaining to durability include blade material, hinge quality, and sharpness, as well as the option to easily sharpen the blades if they dull over time. Look for blades made from rust-proof metal, including stainless steel. Rotary cutters are slightly more expensive, however the investment can be worthwhile. They easily cut through multiple layers at the same time, and rotary cutters cut super straight lines when paired with a sturdy ruler. In addition, they don’t require a cutting mat for usage, nor does it require a solid surface like a table for working because you can suspend the cutting in the air. My garden path to the shed has a concrete edge just below the grass and the Edger was not the right tool here. The Rotocut was ideal for this section though. If you aim to cut long straight lines, then you’d probably consider a rotary cutter as it can be held easily and cuts fast. In terms of cutting ability, rotary cutters and fabric scissors are highly useful to cut through fabric, but both work well on different jobs. Thus, the requirement would generally depend on the type of cutting job you’re performing when making the final decision to use a pair of fabric scissors or a rotary cutter.

My recommendations: if you have a Kombi motor, go for the Stihl. If you want to adapt to a different system, the Stens is still a great option. Both are a dream to use. However, for the rotary cutters, you would require a cutting mat to use underneath the blade. This is the hidden cost alluded to above. Here at DRN we love to find other areas for the tools we test – even beyond what they were designed for. Like test pilots do for aircraft when they explore the edge of the flying envelope. The conventional cutting method with scissors is not only good, but they can work well on complicated cutting designs as well. You just have to grab the handles and follow the mark line. I love to his tool more and more each time I use it. It is great for catching missed spots, and small areas you cannot mow or get close enough to, and cleaning up around flower beds. And the service at Seago was awesome! I could see how the precise cutting, combined with the low throw, would make it safer to work in confined areas and places near vehicles and trees.
