About this deal

I wanted to finish my third draft in time for Pitch Wars, but in September, I connected with a mentor through the Women’s Fiction Writing Association (WFWA). My mentor read my query, synopsis, and first three chapters. She commented how it sounded like a Romance, which had been one of my biggest fears. Not that I have anything against the Romance genre, but though my story is romantic, the plot and structure don’t match with genre expectations. She advised I add more to my synopsis and query regarding a subplot about a looming food inspection. I like to put activities into all the books to make them interactive and more immersive. Any 'gateways' that help get reluctant readers into reading can only be a good thing. I like to think the humour, comic pictures and activities are all a part of this and added extras! Codes and coding were included as the whole story is to do with puzzles and mysteries. In our increasingly tech savvy world, knowledge of coding is becoming increasingly important.

Best friends, Ben and Janet are determined not to let Amy Lou Bonnerman become 4th grade class president, subjecting the whole school to a pony-themed carnival. But when they both decide to run against her, they become rivals! The illustrations are really funny - does it take you long to work on the illustrations or do you doodle as you write the text? I let the novel rest and then read it again on my Kindle. The novel flowed much better, and there were only a few scenes that needed fixing. These recipes are perfect for a weekend treat, baking day with the kids, or to take something special to an event. Actually, literally any reason you need a sweet treat, this book is for that. It replaces every other baking book in the kitchen!I used this draft to enhance my descriptions, incorporate the setting more, make the voices of the characters more distinctive, and fix grammar mistakes. I also read it aloud. Final word count: approx. 89K. And then there's the "Brownies & Blondies" - where you an make the classic fudgy brownies and also branch out to turtle, marshmallow peanut butter and expresso carmel. Cookie gets the chance to go on her favourite TV show, Brainbusters. It's only a chance though - she'll have to win the school science competition first. It shouldn't be too hard . . . all she has to do is keep her head down, and not get too over-excited. Unfortunately that's not Cookie's strong point ...

Known for her restaurant, HotChocolate, Mindy Segal is the author of the best-selling cookbook ‘Cookie Love.’ In addition, she is one of the premier pastry chefs who has appeared on many esteemed TV shows. Gourmet Magazine I also used this time for research, which I also didn’t do ahead of writing my first novel. My novel is set at a cookie factory. Although I have a PhD in Food Science and previous experience as a quality assurance manager, I’d never worked in that type of plant. I had to research special requirements, like handling of ingredients and equipment. I also had to create a company profile, decide what my product would be, and draw a rough sketch. First Draft – Jan to Feb 2019Everyone Has Standards: Arabella's mother comes across as a bit patronising but doesn't seem to think much of Gerry, notices Dilly's embarrassment when he tells her to "quit burbling" and tries to smooth it over. Serial Spouse: Gerry has been married three times. He divorced his first wife Avril to marry his second wife Ashleigh, then divorced her to marry his third and current wife Dilly. Avril gives the impression he tends to trade in his wives for younger, prettier women every decade or so and initially assumes Gerry left Dilly for another woman when she and Beauty turn on Avril's doorstep, only for Dilly to state that she left Gerry. Gerry's selfishness and controlling behavior also probably doesn't make him the best partner, especially if his treatment of Dilly is anything to go by. Nouveau Riche: Gerry comes across as this, having worked his way up to his current, well-paid position. He constantly tries to impress people with his wealth, most notably by forcing Beauty to have a fancy party with all her classmates despite her stating that she would prefer to celebrate her birthday with only a small number of people. In fact, none of Beauty's classmates are impressed by him bragging about the family's huge house. This is one of my favourite Jacqueline Wilson books, and I think Beauty is one of my favourite of her characters too - I find her very relatable, especially her vivid imagination, her awkwardness, and her love of Sara Crewe from 'A Little Princess'.

It is never revealed if Gerry gets any particular punishment for his domestic abuse. However, the story does throw around the possibility that his new business deal will not go through, and that he will get arrested for bribery. Important Haircut: Towards the end of the novel, Beauty gets her long hair cut short. Previously, she’d never been allowed to cut her hair, so it’s a sign of her breaking free from Gerry's control and becoming more of her own person. Everyone agrees that it suits her much better and she gains a much needed confidence boost. Cookie - a lass with sass who'll inspire girls and boys alike (and make mums and dads laugh too) ... daft and funny for all.' - Zoe BallSelf-Made Man: Gerry was this. He tends to use his "hard work" as an excuse to treat his wife and daughter like crap and accuse them of being "ungrateful" if they do something he doesn't like. In the end Dilly is on her way to becoming a Self-Made Woman, starting up her own cookie baking business. Dedicated to food and wine, Gourmet magazine was one of the first monthly publications in the U.S. Founded by Earle R. MacAusland; the magazine had published its first magazine in 1941. Miranda Couse

Since having burnt down her parent’s kitchen, Dorie Greenspan has come a long way. As a columnist for the New York Times Magazine, Dorie has written 14 cookbooks. In recognition of her efforts, she has won many awards such as the Cookbook of the Year Award, the Mérite Agricole, and much more. Brian Hart Hoffman This is evidently a complex situation but I think Jacqueline Wilson has dealt with it remarkably well. We can clearly see how Dilys and Beauty feel oppressed by him. Even though his actions seem loving from the outside, they clearly torment the girls and we are shown how Beauty has learned to act at a young age to please her father. Of course I bristled when I read that, but I love that she included this. There are many people who will tell you to put up with this 'mild' abuse, stay in the nice house, remember others have it worse etc. And of course others are going through worse, but that does not justify things. Beauty's father's continually escalating temper, and the danger it places them in, is instantly undermined, and you see all to clearly how difficult an attempt to break away can be, especially if you're being made to feel at fault.Beauty Cookson: Main character; though timid little girl, she has a sweet personality and adores rabbits and the kids show called "Rabbit Hutch" starring Sam and his rabbit Lily. Cool Big Sis: Angela acts as one to Beauty; she's around fourteen, making her several years older than Beauty. Angela sits next to her on the bus and takes her to her classroom on her first day at her new school, doing her best to reassure Beauty and making her feel welcomed. Rhona Marshall: The only classmate who is nice to Beauty but is unable to be her best friend as she already best friends with Skye though she wishes otherwise.
