This warm, light whisky with notes of vanilla is Penderyn’s most popular single malt, while other offerings from the distillery include a jammy portwood-finished malt and the peatier Celt. A huge label like the typical Famous Grouse varieties sport just hides it, but with this version the whiskey is large and in charge. In 2006, the peated Black Grouse was released, followed two years later by Snow Grouse, a blended grain whisky. This is enough time for the Oloroso sherry seasoning to add a layer of rich and fruity flavour that makes Naked stand out from the crowd.

As a blended scotch whisky, this spirit starts as finished scotch whisky produced from a number of undisclosed distilleries. I like that there’s the bare minimum labeling on this bottle, and I like that they did a bit of work coming up with that embossed grouse design. This liberating leap into the unknown didn’t just work, it was a joyful exuberance of flavour that changed the possibilities of whisky enjoyment! As if to emphasise the family connection, it was Matthew III’s daughter, Phillippa, who drew the very first, and now famous, red grouse that we see on the bottle.
