About this deal

Once again, we measured the HDR brightness with the Peak Brightness setting disabled. The screen is dimmer, but there's still some variation, so we suggest leaving it on: We’re onto the α9 Gen 4 AI processor and new features include Scene Detection and Object Enhancement. The former optimises a scene depending on its type, while the latter trains its focus on faces and objects to offer more definition. There are plenty of more expensive TVs with worse viewing angle than this one, but how are the other aspects of picture quality? Find out in our Samsung UE43AU9000KXXU review. How we test the viewing angle

T3 Awards LG G1 (OLED65G1) review: the best OLED TV at the T3 Awards

Even with the punchiest games, though, the OLED G1 step up from 2020's LG OLEDs don't elevate the brand's OLED performance into a whole new ball park. It's more refinement than revolution. While this initially feels slightly disappointing, it doesn't take long living with the OLED G1 to start feeling as if this initial assessment is a bit foolish. FMM also supports auto-detection over HDMI or from a streaming app, so when it receives a FMM signal it will automatically pivot to the picture mode. As far as I can tell, there’s no content with the Filmmaker mode signal out there. Whether the G1’s somewhat unexciting audio performance is a deal-breaker will depend on your expectations. We were always likely to have recommended that it be partnered with a separate sound system, so won’t mark it down for its sound, particularly as the speakers are clear and direct, despite being almost completely hidden in the chassis. As we’ve come to learn over the years, a TV’s panel technology is only one part of its wider picture quality story. So it’s no surprise to find LG partnering the G1 with a new processing system designed to get the most out of the new panel technology. Not that this Alpha 9 Generation 4 processor stops at optimising pictures to the capabilities of the evo panel, though.

After all, the OLED G1 is providing a 10-20 per cent HDR performance boost to 2020 LG OLED TVs - which were themselves sensational performers. And that's actually a pretty remarkable achievement in a premium TV world now so good that even the tiniest improvements should be embraced like long lost relatives. These two improvements instantly help the G1 deliver a more satisfying and ‘complete’ HDR performance than any LG OLED before. They’re supported, too, by a further slight but again important improvement in colours. With video sources this sees relatively pure blue and, especially, red and green tones enjoying both more subtle tonal delineations and a more natural feel. Especially when they’re presented in a bright situation. Alexa also worked with the few requests I lobbed at her – and, conveniently, I could call her up without using the remote. Both OK Google and Alexa were a little tardy in their responses, though. Picture quality Pictures on the OLED65G1, regardless of whether you’re watching TV or gaming, are consistently and jaw-droppingly spectacular. Not least because the combination of the new panel and improved processing has enabled LG to either improve or full-on fix just about everything that’s been a problem for the brand’s previous OLED efforts. Some lengthy, complex equations then compile all this data and tell us which TVs have the best viewing angles.

Next, we measure for luminance and colour changes at 10-degree horizontal intervals up to 55 degrees, and 10-degree vertical intervals up to 30 degrees. For most people, though, little tweaking will be necessary. Dolby Vision content will by default activate the Dolby Vision Cinema Home preset and AI Brightness Setting, and that equates to a Dolby Vision IQ performance. It’s well worth leaving these settings as they are, as the performance is in line with our expectations of Dolby Vision, and the IQ element improves dark detail when viewing in a well-lit room without tampering with the performance under ideal conditions.A record number of people watched England battle valiantly against Italy in the Euro 2020 final and now the Olympics means that many of us are gathering round our telly to see team GB win medal after medal (hopefully).
