About this deal

My advice to LEGO fans everywhere is if you can make a set work in a way that makes you happy, do it. Finance is provided by PayPal Credit (a trading name of PayPal UK Ltd, Whittaker House, Whittaker Avenue, Richmond-Upon-Thames, Surrey, United Kingdom, TW9 1EH). This is a really great set, but I think the name is weird considering that it's meant to be an Indian vehicle. They were originally designed in Thailand as the motorised equivalent of a rickshaw, although they were prototyped in Italy after WWII to try to rebuild city transportation. I have little interest in vehicles, and so many sets come with them that I already have an abundance of cars.

The exposure time of about 15 to 20 seconds shows the movement of the trains due to motion blur and a stationary taxi. Unfortunately Covid restrictions foiled my plan to take photos with an Asian vibe at some special locations. The blend of yellows, pinks, greens and blues, along with the orange and red studs lining the roof, results in an eye-catching build. There are some nice details in the build like the exhaust pipe, a fire extinguisher and some hanging ornaments which help the model come to life.

As you can see from the pictures, I’ve been having lots of fun with my not-minifigure-scale Tuk Tuk that can fit minifigures in my city.

Just like the 8-wide Speed Champions it would look ridiculously oversized next to typical City vehicles and buildings. I fixed the car with some long plates to a weighted brick as anchor and after finding the right angle taped some plates on the table as guide rails. I've been driven around in a colourful tuk tuk like this one in the middle of Bangkok, and i can tell those drivers hardly ever slow down! There are some SNOT (Studs Not On Top) techniques used for the front and rear bumper and the many jumper plates are used to shift the upper part of the car half a stud. It won't exactly fit with my current display but I'm thinking of making it a street food vendor to join my food truck collection on display as a street food festival (I'm sure I've seen a tuk tuk or rickshaw used for this purpose here in the UK).The only hire vehicle is in LEGO Indiana Jones 2 game in Bangkok, but this simple brown and green vehicle from 2009 never appeared in any sets or films. It is not only a first model of this vehicle, but also the scale is slightly bigger than minifig scale. Ultimately I think it was probably smart for this set, as a Creator set focused more on the vehicle itself than its occupants, to opt for more realistic proportions (even if that renders it slightly too big for minifigures).

To give some highlights to the scene, I used some LEDs to light up the head and taillights of the taxi and to illuminate the windows of the houses. With the addition of three extra parts, 42117 can feel at home in any LEGO city or airport display among the other system aircraft you might have. Yeah it looks nice, but I think it looks a bit too big for the minifig scale (even though "minifig scale" is a vague and inconsistent concept). I wish it was a minifig scale vehicle with a side build in a City set, but inevitably it would not be possible to have so much fine detail in that case.
