About this deal

The writing was pretty scattered I thought. I think if we had followed things in a linear fashion it may have worked better. But going from the 1930s, to 1980, to 1990, to 2000 whatever was a lot. You also have to pay close attention so you can see when people you have followed from the first book have died and passed away. I just felt so annoyed by the whole thing after a while.

It’s funny, when you’re a child you think time will never go by, but when you hit about twenty, time passes like you’re on the fast train to Memphis.” I buddy-read this one with my mother and we really, truly bonded over these words. We laughed and teared up at the same parts. This is one experience I will treasure. Family Favorite: This Southern Classic has been Passed Down from my Granny who Grew Up in the South. No, it wasn't death she was afraid of. It was this life of hers that was beginning to remind her of that gray intensive care waiting room.” Continue to cook the tomatoes until browned and crispy. Remove from the basket with tongs and serve warm with hot mayo. I'm not sure why I had this on my Overdrive wish list. Maybe it showed up on its own? Or maybe I've just expanded my reading interests (now I'll read anything that isn't full of romance because: GROSS!) far enough that this fell into my net at some point. Whatever the case, I finally listened to this book that was all the rage for years during my more youthful times. It's an examination of our evolution and our degradation, a glimpse of small town, Southern, American life. . . where every type of person, every type of relationship, every problem, is fairly represented. The story begins at the Rose Terrace Nursing Home in Birmingham in December 1985. Evelyn Couch has accompanied her husband to visit her mother-in-law, a recent and very unpleasant arrival at the facility. Evelyn escapes to the visitor's lounge, hoping to sneak a few of the candy bars she's grown to depend on. Out of nowhere, an eighty-six year old resident named Virginia Threadgoode begins telling Evelyn about the people or places of her past, the railroad town of Whistle Stop. During her weekly visits, Evelyn goes from humoring "Ninny's" stories to looking forward to them to not being able to live without them.

One word of caution though, this story isn’t all ‘Beer and Skittles’, there are certainly elements of racism, violence and domestic violence that come through – making this story all the more realistic. Although Idgie and Ruth's relationship is not explicitly described as lesbian, every resident both knows about it and accepts it; lesbianism is a theme in the novel. [4] This is a book that 100% succeeds in achieving what it set out to be. It's an extremely worthy follow up to a beloved novel published over three decades ago, and it feels fresh yet nostalgic. For that, how could I give it any less than 5 stars? Stops are made along the way, and you see the town’s demise as the years pass, as people pass. Through Dot’s newsletters you find out that Idgie Threadgoode closed down the Whistle Stop Café in the mid-60’s, and ‘retires’ to Florida near her brother Julian, Buddy marries, becomes a veterinarian, becomes a father, and then and eventually a grandfather. Meanwhile, Whistle Stop slowly becomes a town forgotten by the world, but remembered by the few who lived, and loved, their lives there. How do you feel about a character like Grady Kilgore, Whistle Stop sheriff, member of the Ku Klux Klan, and friend to Idgie and Ruth at the same time?Critics enjoyed the narrative, but found it conventional and predictable. [11] [16] The adaptation of the separate narrative of book to the screen was criticized by Time Out as "clumsy", Roger Ebert praised the performances, Janet Maslin praised the costume and production design and Emanuel Levy praised the cinematography and score. [11] [17] The cast drew praise for their performances, particularly Masterson and Tandy. [11] [17] Audience response [ edit ] Inside the Whistle Stop Cafe, Juliette, Georgia.

Be sure to use regular all-purpose flour instead of heavier whole grain flours. All-purpose flour will keep the recipe light and crispy! Meanwhile, in present day, Mrs Threadgoode urges Evelyn to live her life to the fullest. Just because she has entered middle age does not mean that her life is over. Written during the 1980s era of the working woman, Evelyn is coached on to get a new lease on life, a new career, and enjoy the second half of her time on this earth. In an interview following the novel, Fannie Flagg points out that she prefers older characters because they have many layers to their lives and much advice to offer to younger generations. It is in this mind set that she made Mrs Threadgoode the central point of her novel.Although in the book Idgie and Ninny are two distinctly separate characters, at the end of the film it is largely hinted that they are one and the same. [7] This runs counter to Ninny's earlier comment that "I was practically adopted by the Threadgoodes; I married her [Idgie's] brother, Cleo". Additionally, the film has Ruth being in love with Buddy Threadgoode, Idgie's brother. [12] Release [ edit ]
