About this deal

My receipt of a review copy from the publisher did not impact the expression of my honest opinions above. As I was saying over at Angie’s blog, where yesterday she reviewed this novel, I’m also not a huge fan of ‘pregnant teen gets married and everything’s all better’ storylines in general. Yet I would bet every penny I’ve earned in my life that Dave Eggers wouldn’t touch a sequel to this book with a ten-foot-pole. But eventually they realize there might be something that's not the same but similar and they both work towards making that happen in each of their worlds. Named a best book of 2023 by NPR, Publishers Weekly, The Wall Street Journal, Common Sense Media, Shepherd, the New York Public Library, the Chicago Public Library, Booklist, Kirkus, and Powell’s Books.

For this update to the 2014 original edition, British historian and journalist Nicholas Foulkes has selected the 100 breakthrough timepieces developed since the advent of the twentieth century, weighing the virtues of rarity, costliness, innovative functions, historical importance, grand provenance and pleasing design. Her relationship with Miranda is strained because of Miranda’s illness, but there are some genuinely touching moments between the two. It is little wonder that the man behind the nation-wide 826 initiatives where kids do a fair amount of creative writing has handed us a book that ends with what is essentially a gigantic writing prompt. I devoured this book in a single sitting and would reread it happily if asked to do so, which I cannot say for every kids book I pick up. An Almost Impossible Thing follows six women gardeners in the years before the First World War, and examines their lives in the context of suffragism, collectivism and Empire.I've been a fan of Sarah Lotz forever, Impossible is a departure for her whilst at the same time being exactly what you hope for in so many ways.

Firstly, I did not get the Kindle edition, so I cannot say whether the lazy typesetting in the first edition ruined the last page for other people as it did for me (took me 5 minutes to work it out), and I am therefore discounting it and giving the author the five stars she deserves because I thoroughly enjoyed this novel and could not put it down. I’d recommend it to anyone that is looking for a new novel with strong relationships and romance elements, but lighter on character or plot development. For generations the Scarborough women have been cursed to lose their minds by the time they turn eighteen, shortly after giving birth to a daughter who will suffer the same terrible fate. Though the romance is front and centre, the book explores so much more, imagining where we’d be now if our leaders had made different choices.Another bit of fun is the repeated presence of David Bowie references, including an album you have never heard of. If you want your life to be transformed from crushing and dutiful legalism to heartfelt longing to obey then read this book. In any case, I did appreciate the love story between Zach and Lucy, and I felt sympathetic toward both young characters.

Bee is smart, funny and immensely likeable, Nick is also very witty as they bring out the absolute best in each other. I definitely recommend this book if you want to read something a bit different and possibly impossible to forget. They get to know each other through their messages for about the first 25% of the book and that’s where the story really kicks in.It is in the way Johannes speaks about his greatest passion that Eggers shows he has done the imaginative work required to bring us closer to an animal perspective.
