About this deal

From here, we will work down in sectioned panels so in the next panel use a 2B pencil in the same way. The pencil lines will seemingly get smaller as you’re working from right to left. There’s no need to worry about making each section exactly a centimetre in length, as light doesn’t work in measured panels!

We can see everything because of the contrast between light and shadow. The bigger the clumps, the bigger the shadow between them. Despite my love of B pencils, there are times when I delve into the H pencils. There are also artists who love their H pencils with the same fervor that I love my 6B. Pencil love is a unique and beautiful thing. The number found in front of the letter reveals just how soft or hard the pencil is. In other words, a "4H" pencil is harder than a "2H" pencilwhile a "4B" pencil is softer than a "2B" pencil. Moving onto the cylinder, use a secondary piece of paper to cover the right hand side of the sheet. This acts as a mask to help you get a neat line as you start to shade so the mask should run directly down the right hand side of your cylinder. A lot of their products are vegan too, which is always a great perk. When to Choose H Pencils Over B Pencils

F and HB pencils are middle of the road and more general use pencils. F tends to still be a tad hard, while HB and B tend to be a nice blend of both worlds. Though they cannot get very dark. B-Grade Pencils and How to Use Them As far as numbers and letters go, drawing pencils range from 9H at the hardest and lightest to 9B at the softest and darkest. At either end of the spectrum, you’re going to find extremely hard or extremely soft pencils. Now the difficult part—we need to draw the shadows between clumps to make fur pop. There are certain "signs" you can use as a base, but you need to try it yourself to understand how to draw a fur clump. Practice on the side for a moment if you're not sure how to do it. Or, maybe I’m creating a sketch that I’m uncertain about and want to experiment with a little more before making darker, more permanent lines on my paper. The strokes are best to work away from the light source and can lighten slightly as we get to the edge of our shadows. The nearer the shadow is to the object, the darker it will be. You may want to work into a 6B shade as we get nearer the edges of our cylinders shadow.

When choosing a hard drawing pencil, I don’t usually go above 5H. Even 5H is too light for my taste. If you notice something you'd like to change, this is the time to do it. However, don't be tempted to add more contrast—the darker the shadows, the harder the clumps will look. Soft fur doesn't have so many clear shadows, because light easily gets through it. 3. How to Draw Short Fur Step 1 At the end of the day, every new art tool you use will take some patience and practice to get used to. Once you get familiar with your drawing pencils, you may find that certain pencils work best for you for certain reasons. That’s great! Embrace that! So the big secret is: to draw convincing fur with a pencil, you need to draw not the hairs/clumps, but the shadows between them.H" pencils are better suited for filling the tooth or texture of the paper, resulting in smoother transitions of tone and value. "B" pencils fill the tooth to a lesser degree, making the texture of the paper more noticeable. By combining "H" and "B" pencils in a drawing, smooth transitions of tone can be developed without compromising a full range of value. H-grade pencils sharpen very nicely to an extremely fine point and retain that point for longer periods of time. They require less sharpening, which makes them great for detailed work that doesn't require dark values, but they have a slightly abrasive feel due to their higher clay content and work best on smooth paper with little texture. You can use the side of the graphite tip for subtle and high-value (light) shading techniques. The surface of the paper also plays a role in the pencils that you choose. Papers with a lighter tooth (smoother surface) may be more receptive to harder pencils and show less of the texture when softer pencils are applied. Papers with heavier textures may be more receptive to softer pencils but reveal more of the surface texture as they are applied. Work in comfort when you use the Pentel GraphGear mechanical pencil. It is inlaid with soft pads that will feel good on your fingers. Beyond that, the pencil features a dual retractor to both advance and retract your lead with ease.

Use it to add some darker shadows to the middle part as well, but do it very subtly. This part doesn't need a lot of shadows, and the clearer they are, the wetter the tail will look. Step 13

Keep collections to yourself or inspire other shoppers! Keep in mind that anyone can view public collections - they may also appear in recommendations and other places.

Grades of drawing pencils are organized in a scale based on softness or hardness. An "HB" pencil is found directly in the center of the scale. Available in different sets filled with a wide variety of grades, both beginners and professionals swear by Derwent. You can select between soft, medium, and hard sets depending on your subject matter and people note that the pencils are easy to sharpen to a point, as well as a flat shape. This allows for detailed work, as well as shading. And the hexagonal shape makes them easy to grip. Take the eraser to add some highlights to the illuminated side. If you have a kneader eraser, you can actually draw some hair with it—if not, a normal eraser will do. Step 15 Take the 2B pencil and use the same technique to shade the side of the tail fur drawing. We need to give it a 3D form. Step 4

Use the hair on the side as a guide for direction. The greater the angle, the shorter and wider the shadows should be. Opening the angle can help make the fluffy texture more convincing. Use the 2B pencil for this, and hold it tilted for a more natural flow. If you drew any sharp, thin lines, your eye would mistake them for some stray hair, which would break the fluffy texture effect. Step 8 categorized and usually only feature a number. For example, a #2 pencil is a standard writing pencil - which happens to beof the same softness as an "HB" drawing pencil. If you push too hard with an H pencil, it could possibly leave indentations in your paper. Not good. The whole point of using a light pencil that doesn’t leave permanent marks on your paper has been negated if indentations are left behind. Once you know what type of artwork you need the pencil for, you need to understand the different grades of graphite pencils. Even though we often refer to lead in pencils, there is actually no component of lead used in them. Whereas colored pencils are made with wax and pigment, graphite pencils are a mixture of graphite and clay. The combination of these two components allows for smooth strokes, but graphite pencils will give different lines depending on how much clay is present. Generally, the more clay in the pencil, the harder the pencil—and lighter the stroke—will be. This Faber-Castell set includes 12 pencils ranging from 5H to 5B, which gives you a great range to work with. It leaves out my beloved 6B, but it’s a great set to start with.
