About this deal

Preferring the company of children to adults, his Alice books were inspired by his friendship with the young Alice Liddell, the daughter of the Dean of Christ Church, where Carroll was a mathematics instructor. The girls and Carroll took another boat trip a month later, when he elaborated the plot to the story of Alice, and in November he began working on the manuscript in earnest. Surprised, Alice follows him down a rabbit hole, which sends her into a lengthy plummet but to a safe landing.

The Mock Turtle sings them "Beautiful Soup" during which the Gryphon drags Alice away for a trial, in which the Knave of Hearts stands accused of stealing the Queen's tarts. Lewis Carroll's Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking-Glass : A Publishing History. Included are: Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, Through the Looking-Glass, Sylvie and Bruno, Sylvie and Bruno Concluded, The Hunting of the Snark and all of the poetry, essays and phantasmagoria along with a substantial collection of his miscellaneous writings.

The published version of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland is about twice the length of Alice's Adventures Under Ground and includes episodes, such as the Mad Tea-Party, that did not appear in the manuscript.

Also included are the original, iconic illustrations by John Tenniel and an introduction by Lori Campbell. The characters are eccentric and odd, but are juxtaposed with ‘nonsensical’ wisdom that make them so lovable and creative. Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, known by his pen name, Lewis Carroll, was happiest in the company of children for whom he created puzzles, clever games and charming letters. And the way the queens move so fast (making Alice run and get out of breath) corresponds to the way a queen is allowed to move.I’m a massive fan of fairytales and short story collections and understand that some will be better than others but I really wasn’t a fan of the selection in this one. The manuscript was illustrated by Carroll who added 37 illustrations—printed in a facsimile edition in 1887. Beyond its refashioning of Carroll's everyday life, Cohen argues, Alice critiques Victorian ideals of childhood.

Labelled "a dauntless, no-nonsense heroine" by The Guardian, the character of the plucky, yet proper, Alice has proven immensely popular and inspired similar heroines in literature and pop culture, many also named Alice in homage. These works range from fairly faithful adaptations to those that use the story as a basis for new works. Based on both Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking-Glass, Papp and Swados had previously produced a version of it at the New York Shakespeare Festival. The nonsense of Sylvie and Bruno blended with those existential conversations in the adult world was just not engaging for me. The equally popular sequel Through the Looking-Glass and What Alice Found There, was published in 1872.

I like the fact that it has a mix of fiction and non-fiction activities … and how material can link to other areas of the curriculum, not just literacy. Their brother-sister relationship is so incredibly cute, even if it can come off as cloying on occasion. She has no choice but to adapt to the rules of Wonderland's inhabitants, and go along with what seems to her to be nonsense, but for them, is real life. The members of the boating party that first heard Carroll's tale show up in chapter 3 ("A Caucus-Race and a Long Tale"). A new edition, released in December 1865 for the Christmas market but carrying an 1866 date, was quickly printed.

Further, mousa (meaning muse) was a standard model noun in Greek books of the time in paradigms of the first declension, short-alpha noun. Highly recommend for book lovers, book collectors or to introduce someone to the fantastical world of Lewis Carroll. Sure, I understood that the book explored some themes like growing up, but other than that, I didn't worry myself about the hidden symbolisms.
