I don't often give books five stars when there are words I don't appreciate and sexual scenes in them. The half star I debited in my rating was in the early part of the book where the majority of time was spent in reading the text of the mysterious two authorless books. If you’re like me and you simply cannot get enough of “ historicals“, then you may want to check out my reviews of some other historical fiction novels. Instead what we got is a weak present timeline that added all sorts of extraneous details that ultimately didn’t even seem all that important (and spoiler alert: I swear by the end the author even realized this because it stops being the main focus of the novel randomly? We also start out Belle and Hemi’s story knowing it’s going to be tragic, so it’s not exactly a spoiler that their 1941 idyll gets, well, spoiled.
