For example, can they both talk and ask about pets, their favourite school subjects, spare time activities, music or favourite YouTube clips… It is important to enable and develop every child’s capacity to ask and be interested in class mates’ so that everyone can get to know everyone else as whole people and not labelled people. The children are unlikely to be familiar with the flower names on the last slide. They are quite unusual flowers, but they all grow in the UK and Ireland. They are all beautiful and they are all different.

This ground-breaking book examines the roots and impact of identity-based prejudice in schools, drawing on Shaun's own experiences of homophobic bullying and his subsequent career as a teacher and school leader. The core of the book is based on Shaun's award-winning training programme Inclusion For All, endorsed by the Department for Education, presenting an effective approach to LGBT+ inclusion at a whole-school level. This includes practical strategies to eradicate prejudice, prevent bullying, embrace diversity and improve whole-school outcomes such as attendance and attainment, as well as mindfulness techniques and ideas for INSET training sessions and school assemblies.

Celebrating Differences

Written with warmth, humour and compassion, this is a must-read guide for all teachers and school leaders who wish to promote inclusion, celebrate difference and ensure safer futures for all young people. For example, you could talk about the history of disablism to share how the disability rights movement came about and show why it is important that people are given equal rights. At the same time, other children might need to learn how to communicate with a classmate who communicates in a different way or finds it hard to communicate. Celebrating Difference is an inspiring handbook for LGBT+ inclusion, aimed at all primary and secondary teachers and leaders. Written by Shaun Dellenty, internationally celebrated lead in LGBT+ inclusion in education, it is filled with practical advice to enable schools to bring about organisational change to ensure the safety, success, mental health and wellbeing of all pupils and staff.

Case studies and interviews with pupils and teachers who have experienced the Inclusion For All process and unique research insights from Dr Joseph Hall, University of Leeds, demonstrate how the strategies work in practice. Clear guidance will also enable schools to comply with Ofsted and statutory equality legislation, and help them to teach children about British values, basic human rights and the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC). Now think about your class and each member of it. It is the combination of children with all their differences that makes it such a rich place. Recommended. Celebrating Difference is essential and valuable reading for every teacher and school leader - a groundbreaking book to help make our schools safer spaces for all young people. - Peter Tatchell, Director, Peter Tatchell Foundation

You will need the PowerPoint slides that accompany this assembly ( Celebrating Differences) and the means to display them. The allium is from the onion family and grows from a bulb. It has beautiful flower heads on the end of very long stems. Have you seen any onions in the supermarket that are as attractive as this? Ask pupils to think about all the things that make them who they are: their looks, their strengths, their religion, their family and their culture. You might be similar to other people in our school community, or you might be very different, but we are all welcome and we are all part of a wonderful, diverse world. So many older LGBT+ people will be able to relate to Shaun's personal journey; it's why we need to constantly be reminding people of the 'not so long ago' past. Celebrating Difference is written beautifully with honesty and passion to make LGBT+ education understandable for everybody, without any barriers or prejudice needing to be in place. Once children have the knowledge and understanding, they will lead the way to becoming the LGBT+ educators of their siblings, mothers, fathers and other family members. - -- Dr Carl Austin-Behan, LGBT+ Advisor to the Mayor of Greater Manchester For example, if you have a child in school who is trans, consider accessible training or information for the staff team to ensure they are well equipped to create an inclusive environment for that young person.

The echinopsis is a cactus, a greenhouse plant. It likes heat and has to be kept completely dry in winter. The flowers can be white, golden-yellow or pink and are sweetly scented. In some species, these open during the evening and last for about two days. Blink and you can end up missing them! I can show an awareness of who I am and that I am similar and different to others. (Progression step 1) Shaun Dellenty's whole-school approach to LGBT+ inclusion is a huge stride towards genuine organisational change. Regardless of the stage you or your school are at, this accessible and stimulating book will be highly relevant and of much value. - -- Dr Joseph Hall, University of LeedsChildren know about similarities and differences between themselves and others, and among families, communities and traditions. (Foundation) Ask pupils to spend a few moments thinking about the ways in which they are different from the people next to them. Do they look different? Do they like different things? Do they have different strengths and weaknesses? Can you think of a friend that has been able to teach you something new, because they come from a different place or speak a different language? To consider that being different from one another is something to be celebrated. Preparation and materials I am beginning to develop my awareness of similarities and differences between people. Give the names of six children in the school who are different in size, age, sex, ethnicity, ability and so on. Ask these children to come to the front of the assembly. Christians believe that God is a creator who loves variety. He made thousands of flower species and within each flower species, thousands of variations. He took even more care when he made us - we are all different. Even twins are not exactly the same. How wonderful! How boring it would be if we had 100 children in the school all exactly the same as each other! Imagine if all the teachers were exactly the same, too! Begin by asking pupils what their favourite lesson in school is. Take a selection of answers and point out how different everyone’s favourite is. Now imagine that you only got to do maths, all day every day, and never got to have a go at doing something different. Would it get boring? Say that we have a 'diverse curriculum', which means learning about lots of different things and having a wide variety of activities. This makes school much more interesting. We also have diversity in the types of people there are in the world - different heights, different hair colour, different likes and dislikes - and that diversity of people and cultures makes life more interesting too. Tell everyone they'll now watch a short video about diversity.
