About this deal

The Heston from Waitrose range brought customers some iconic products; notably the hidden orange Christmas pudding and mince pies and hot cross buns with characteristic twists. The mincemeat inside the pies is made up of vine fruits, apples, figs and candied pears, all spiced with nutmeg and ginger, and laced with ruby port. All that is wrapped in cheesy pastry which uses a combination of cheddar, emmental and Italian hard cheese to create a distinctly savoury and decadent flavour. This turkey breast crown comes with a prime wing, and is perfect for a small group of two or three people. When there’s just a few of you, you don’t want to spend all your time in the kitchen away from the fun, so this crown can be roasted in the bag on a baking tray for ultimate convenience. A crown is also easier to carve than a whole turkey – what’s not to love? With their intricate snowflake and star design, Aldi’s budget pies look suitably festive. They haven't shied away from sweetness in the simple filling, but the bulk of the pies’ flavour comes from the buttery, biscuity pastry. Another added: "I bought these as I do like Heston's ideas. But this is not one I'm afraid.it didn't look like a mince pie ok I couldn't taste anything of the cheese anf fig etc. Definitely not on my repeat buy list. If it doesn't look like a mince pie it won't taste like one." [sic]

From secret feuds and sexy scandals to the biggest showbiz headlines - we're serving up a daily dose of gossip. From 7am on Tuesday 16 November, our Partners will be the first to see the advert before it launches on waitrose.com at 7:30am and on our social channels at 8am. The mince pies look rather impressive, they are quite large, and have a fab crumble on top. The crumble pieces are quite big, but they have the texture of soft pastry, and are lovely and buttery. The pastry case is quite dark looking, and must be where some of the spice infusion hits, as these mince pies are full on. As someone who loves cinnamon, these pies come with a strong hit of it and all the other christmas spices. This to me was more noticeable than the lemon, which came as a refreshing zingy aftertaste. The mince filling looks quite thin, but again its rich flavours come through beautifully. I found the salted caramel one too salty and too chocolate-y and I couldn't taste the caramel – DeannaBut the Heston brand won’t be winding down without a final flourish and a new product for Easter, The Chocolate Dabbit. Appearance - By far the biggest of the mince pies and they’ve been bold in going for a tree on top, rather than the star. We also taste-tested fruit mince pie alternatives... for research, of course! And even if you're catering exclusively to fruit mince pie lovers, it's nice to have some variety – although perhaps more options means it's easier to overindulge?

To be honest, I’ve been eating mince pies from the supermarkets since October (anyone else?) but I had it marked out in my diary for when the following independent bakeries in Leeds were going to launch theirs. They are all deliciously decadent, homemade and the ultimate treat this winter – make sure you buy a handful and it goes without saying, I highly recommend two mince pies in one sitting.

Taste - Rich fruit and carrot mincemeat with cream sherry, in a carrot and caraway pasty. Sounds weird, tastes weird. Sorry Heston, this is a step too far. When the gluten-free option is so delicious, no one will feel like they’re missing out, although you will have to head in-store to get your hands on Costa’s free-from bake. Sold individually, testers described these pies are “luxurious”, enjoying the fruity, citrussy filling and chunky texture. Importantly, the pastry was buttery and crumbly, but managed to avoid falling apart when we took a bite. According to a statement made by the retailer, they will be taking product development in a new direction with its own team of development chefs and product developers.

This year, inspired by Eccles cakes, they're covered in puff pastry that's laced withCheddar, Emmental and Italian hard cheese and inside you'll find a mix of vine fruits, figs, Bramley apple, ruby port, candied pears, nutmeg and ginger. We've been fans of the Heston mince pies up until now - is this a step too far? We'll definitely be trying them, though. Taste - These tasted exactly like Christmas. The pastry was lovely and the filling was spiced perfectly and had plenty of fruit. The type of mince pie you find room for just before you crash out after a long day of eating.
