It is important to note that the rainwater collected by your water butt is not always crystal clean – in fact there are a few things you should do to mitigate the risk of damaging your plants. This Straight multi-piece water butt stand is made from a high quality plastic which is an ideal addition to this water butt. Plants often thrive better when water from a butt is used because the temperature is ambient (similar to the surrounding environment), as opposed to tap water which is often much colder.

Black Poly Water Butt - 200 Ltr

Yes, rainwater collected in a properly maintained water butt is safe for various non-potable uses, such as watering plants or green spaces and outdoor cleaning. However, it's not recommended for drinking or cooking. Reclaimed greywater can also be used for washing clothes; again this has to be treated to a similar level as the water used for toilets. And like the toilet greywater, plumbing needs to be put in place to redirect the water to the appropriate place in the house. Benefits Plus, there are internally threaded holes designed for taps and connections, and a supplied template with easy-to-follow instructions is very handy. Simply fix to your downpipe and it will begin collecting rainwater.

There is a reduction in the amount of pollutants entering rivers and water systems as less greywater needs to be commercially treated. The greywater can also be treated using more expensive mechanical filters, such as microfiltration systems using membranes. We have looked at this in more detail in harvesting rainwater – so please look there for more information. Uses for treated greywater Using greywater for flushing toilets Another benefit of water butts is that they are easy to install and use. Most water butts are designed to fit under a downpipe, allowing rainwater to flow directly into the storage tank. They also come with a tap or spigot at the bottom, allowing you to easily access the water when you need it. Some models even come with a hose or watering can attachment, making it even easier to use the collected rainwater for your gardening needs. Water butts come in a variety of styles and sizes to suit your needs and preferences. Some models are designed to blend in with your garden decor, while others are more functional and utilitarian in appearance. You can choose a size that suits your needs, whether you have a small balcony garden or a large outdoor space.

Great for the environment – not only are most rainwater butts made from recycled plastic, they also save approximately 30,000 million litres of fresh water each summer!

Greywater with food debris in it needs to be treated anaerobically using a septic tank (see treating domestic sewage for details on how a septic tank works). The water that comes out of the other end of the septic tank can then be treated with the soilbox filter or using wetlands as mentioned above. 4. Mechanical filters (for using the water to flush toilets) These Automatic Solar Powered Watering Systems are weather responsive smart irrigation controllers which uniquely use solar power to detect the weather conditions to alter the watering accordingly. It's available in three different colours (green, gunmetal grey and forest green). And it also comes with 230L capacity, if you're looking for something a little bigger. Manufactured in the UK using recycled material, this water butt kit from Harcostar contains everything you will need to start your water conservation journey, including a stand and a universal rain trap and easy to follow instructions.

Oak Rattan Effect Poly Water Butt - 150ltr

Water butts are a completely free way of harvesting rainwater, thus helping to keep your water bills down. This is especially beenficial if you are on a water meter, and need to be conservative eith the amount of water you are using. On average, spraying plants with water uses 4-6 litres per day. That adds up over time! Where possible, position the rainwater butt in a darker place, away from the sun. Doing this will ensure the water remains cool, preventing bacteria from growing.

If the greywater is inadequately treated, then this could contaminate the groundwater which would have adverse impacts on animal and plant life. Ecoplay is one of a number of companies that has produced a greywater pump that pumps water away from a variety of greywater sources including washing machines, showers and utility sinks. When the water enters the pump unit, it can then pump the water vertically to where it is required. The water is then treated in a storage tank (normally chemically by adding chlorine) before it is sent to the cistern of a toilet or the washing machine.

It is also important to clean your water butt, especially after rainfall seasons. This is because stagnant water can stink if left in the water butt for long periods. This water does not need to be treated with chemicals as any organic material remaining in the water can be absorbed by the plants. It is not recommended to use this type of water with home grown vegetables. Using greywater to wash clothes It is not recommended to use greywater on fruit or crops, since there is a chance the plant will ingest the harmful pathogens when they are watered. 2. Biological Systems (non-food debris) Water butts are also an eco-conscious choice. By collecting rainwater, you can reduce the amount of water that runs off your property and into the sewer system. This not only conserves water resources but also helps to prevent flooding and erosion. Additionally, by using rainwater instead of mains water for activities such as watering your garden, you can reduce your carbon footprint and do your part to combat climate change. Using this greywater is relatively simple, you can either syphon it directly from the bath or sink or you can fit a valve to the external waste pipe allowing you to direct the water to a water butt, so it can be used as needed to water the flowerbed.
