This can, at least in slight, be seen as a contributing factor to the downfall of Sega as a console manufacturer. The console wasn't discontinued in Europe, Austrailia and New Zealand until 1998, where it was outsold by the Super NES as well as the Saturn. The Mega Drive / Genesis was pulled out of the Japanese and North American markets before the SNES; however, this is not including the licensed Majesco and ATGames versions of the Mega Drive. up for Nintendo and made its mark in console history. Confused about how to plug classic gaming systems into a HDTV? Here’s how

Sega Genesis is also popular with many players on the Mega Drive in North America. This is a 16-bit console game console made by the famous Japanese gaming company, SEGA. Sega Genesis is the third generation gaming console released and is the successor of the Sega Master System. It was first published in Japan in 1988 and expanded its market to the global region in the following years. The market they targeted was North America with the Genesis name in 1989, and in 1990, it was distributed as Mega Drive by Virgin Mastertronic in Europe. Sega officially stopped manufacturing this product in 1997 after nine years of continuous production. During those nine years, the total sales of the Sega Genesis were 30.75 worldwide. This is a very terrible number and brought massive revenue to SEGA and brought SEGA’s name to the world.

Roseville, California: Prima Publishing. p. 383. ISBN 0-7615-3643-4. The appearance of the Mega Drive was designed by a team led by Mitsushige Shiraiwa that drew inspiration from audiophile equipment and automobiles. Shiraiwa said this more mature look helped to target the Mega Drive to all ages, unlike the Famicom, which was aimed primarily at children. [24] According to Sato, the Japanese design for the Mega Drive was based on the appearance of an audio player, with "16-bit" embossed in a golden metallic veneer to create an impression of power. [12] As such, Sega released titles such as Altered Beast and the Phantasy Star games. Although the NES and Nintendo's impending SNES were still threats to Sega's market share, they had forced the theoretically competitive TurboGrafx-16 system into relative obscurity, thanks in part to NEC's poor North American marketing campaign. The NEC TurboGrafx-16 (PC Engine) was also a competitor to the Mega Drive, but it did not have a major hold on the 16 bit era outside of Japan. The other main competitor, the Neo Geo AES from SNK, did not sell well due its large price tag both for the system itself and for its titles. Screen Digest". Screen Digest.
