About this deal

An electric blanket plugs into the mains and warms up via heating elements within the fabric itself. Most electric blankets are actually “toppers” or under blankets, which mean you secure them on top of your mattress and lie on them. They fix onto the mattress with corner straps or elasticated skirting. The heat is managed by a remote control that’s attached to the blanket. This can usually be detached so you can put the blanket in the washing machine. Also available are electric throws to wrap around yourself on the sofa. Are electric blankets safe to use?

One solution is an old school electric blanket. Except there’s nothing old school about the tech being used to heat electric blankets these days. New electric blankets have all kinds of features, such as dual controls, targeted areas for warming, and multiple heat settings. And all for just a fraction of the price of blasting the central heating all night.

Tip: Preheat it on a low heat in advance, rather than blasting it on a high heat before you get into bed – this way you won’t use so much power. This, of course, is the most crucial question as the price of energy soars and the general cost of living increases. The cost of running an electric blanket varies, depending on which heat setting you use (some blankets have up to nine different heat settings).

This means running an electric blanket for one hour would cost just over 3p and around 27p a night (based on 8 hours of use), which is significantly cheaper than having your central heating on all night. For a smaller 50W or 60W blanket, running costs will be even cheaper. What sort of electric blanket is best? Look for electric blankets with auto shut-off timers, so they can’t be left running for too long. And, helpfully, machine-washable ones will make life easier all round. It's getting seriously cold out there. It's time to get warm and snuggly. But here’s the problem: Nothing is getting any cheaper. On the contrary, in fact. We're all being hit with soaring energy prices. Now everyone’s thinking twice about even putting the central heating on to stay warm. Never mind keep it on all through the night. Opt for a throw (or over-blanket) if you want one that works well in the living room, but if you’re just looking for a night-time warmer, an under-blanket can stay put and be ready and waiting come bedtime.

Whilst electric blankets are designed to create a warm and cosy environment when getting into bed, they are not recommended for overnight use and should be turned off when getting into bed or set on a timer to turn off within a short while. 'Make sure to also use your electric blanket as the top layer, above any other blankets or duvets and do not lie or sit on it,' Hayley Thistleton at SleepSeeker explains. However, the blanket itself is quite rigid compared to some – I found it made my memory foam mattress firm, and less comfortable, to sleep on. However, the size of the blanket was good – I didn’t feel any cold spots other than around the pillow area. On average, it took about 10 minutes to heat up – longer than the maker’s estimated five-minute heat up, but this may be because memory foam tends to be cooler to the touch. As well as considering the type of blanket you’d like, there are plenty of features to consider too. If you share your bed, stave off arguments and get the conditions right for both of you by looking for a blanket with multiple heat zones and dual control, so you can each choose how warm you’d like it – dreamy!
