About this deal

Blurb from the publisher: 'The Carcassonne Big Box combines the 2001 Spiel des Jahres with 11 of its expansions: the perfect starter set for Carcassonne fans and anyone who wants to play this bestselling game with as much variety as possible. The Crop Circles mini-expansion—a bit of a misnomer since only one of the tile types contains a shape even remotely resembling a circle—is composed of six tiles, with two copies of each. I talked about the base game at length with Andrew Holmes, and many of the early expansions were the basis for my earliest reviews posted on Boardgamegeek.

If any of these tiles are present in a city when a player completes it, they gain the matching commodities from the supply. Later, if a player extends a road that has a Lake tile as part of it, they will have the opportunity to adjust the ferry on that tile, potentially re-opening roads that have already been scored.Aside from the eight tiles included with this expansion, there is also a six-sided die with each die face containing one to three pips. Carcassonne is a tile-laying game where players collectively construct the area around the medieval French city of Carcassonne while competing to place followers on various features and score the most points. The Gold Mines mini-expansion consists of eight tiles with gold symbols on them and sixteen tiny wooden gold bars. In my conversation with Andrew, I spoke of the “divorce expansions”—those expansions that are so aggressive that they threaten the very fabric of the peace in your home—and this one falls squarely in that camp. Since the first Carcassonne Big Box was released in 2006, there have been a total of seven different variations.

From then on, every time you place a tile that expands the road or city your builder is in, you get to immediately play another round. Very pleased with this wonderful box and the service from Sue; it's perfect for my carcassonne collection. The Carcassonne Big Box is the perfect starter set for everyone who finally wants to get to know Carcassonne in all its diversity and of course also for all Carcassonne fans. art) compatibility with content outside of these boxes is not a huge concern for me; I don’t know if I particularly like the look of the new style “busier” cities or not.

Those playing the original game only know what it means to overcommit in farming, and allow the most industrious and adaptive players to claim points left and right. When playing with six players, it is not unlikely to wait from two to five minutes before your turn comes again, depending on the situation.

Abbeys are treated as usual—once the tile is completely surrounded, they’re worth nine points when they score (provided they score during the game and not at the end when only partial points are awarded). One of the classic games of our times packed in a box with so much content that you will wonder whether you will ever need to play anything else. In the original version of Carcassonne, abbeys were always a gamble and it could be frustrating—nay, downright soul-crushing—to have your meeples stuck out there on abbeys that were never likely to be completed. While the tiles will take up more space and add extra time to the game, there’s no reason to ever play without the big meeple. This is allowed only if, on that particular feature as it is now linked with the rest of the map, no other meeples can be found.
