About this deal

Internationally bestselling superstar author Angie Thomas makes her middle grade debut with the launch of a contemporary fantasy trilogy inspired by African American history and folklore. I do have some basic knowledge about America, but honestly, there were a couple of times when I was just baffled by what was being said or mentioned. Although there are plenty of magical elements the emphasis throughout the story is that you do not actually need the magic to fulfil your potential or achieve great things in your life. It was such a pleasure to meet you both, and I really appreciated how smoothly and professionally you ran everything.

I liked how the representation of this book is just 👏🏻✨👏🏻 Props to Angie Thomas for never forgetting about the BLM movement and its written in the story really well. The Manifestor Prophecy is a tantalizing first installment in what is sure to be a blockbuster series, and a remarkable achievement for a master author in a thrilling new arena. Film rights have been optioned by Fox 2000 with George Tillman attached to direct and Hunger Games actress Amandla Stenberg set to star. Her father hasn't yet taught her how to use her Gift, but she's aware of the Remarkable world, creatures, traditions and is desperate to start using her powers. I had so much fun with this book and I’ve found myself once again utterly in awe of Angie Thomas’s talent. Angie Thomas was born, raised, and still resides in Jackson, Mississippi as indicated by her accent.

year old Nic, who has always known she comes from a remarkable (magic) family, finds out that the plot of her favorite fantasy series is actually true and involves her family and … well her destiny.A world where magic is filled in a way that takes the lores from African culture but set in America.

Nic Blake and the Remarkables: The Manifestor Prophecy is a meaningful, complex and brilliantly exciting story, reminiscent of Mia and the Lightcasters with its . Overall, this is another take on the middle-grade magical fantasy genre that has exploded over the last twenty years. While I find Thomas' writing to beautiful and fluid, she spent a lot of time telling instead of showing us the development of both the characters and the world. I wouldn't read a horror novel and give it a low rating because it was 'too scary', and similarly I don't judge MG/YA for feeling 'immature'.

To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. This is so much in conversation with Harry Potter/JKR and the way that stories/authors can betray their readers and it's just like *chef's kiss*. It's nice to diverge from reading the same popular middle-grade books, yet have the familiarity of the story style, but with a diverse cast of characters and a back story and world that is so unique.

It’s a story that feels familiar (we’ve got the chosen one, missing parents, kids saving the day etc. Thomas skillfully incorporates folktales from the African Diaspora and infuses her story with the energy and emotional nuance of a pre-teen in this tale of intrigue, loyalty, identity, and courage--the first book in a projected trilogy. I can't wait for more and I can't wait to share it with my kids (I think it's still a little too scary for young elementary). Angie Thomas has certainly hit the ground running with a brilliantly relatable set of protagonists that many young readers will get a lot out of, in this book, and I hope in the sequels to follow! The story is adventurous and the plot is easy to follow as most things occur in the Unremarkable’s world.
