Cut 2 of the wing shapes from patterned fabric and then secure them in position using a running stitch. The book covers so much more than how to embroider birds, it walks you through everything needed to create your own artwork. I love making them, especially as I invested in a new sewing machine a couple of weeks ago (a wonderful Bernina) which is an absolute dream to work with.

She has written articles for various magazines and books, such as Masterworks and Inspirations, as well as having her book Embroidered Landscapes published by Sally Milner.Stop just before the end and stuff a little fibre fill into the gap, then finish stitching around the bird.

Here are a few recent birds, I must admit that I was especially pleased with some of them, but I think the little coal tit is my favourite so far. These pretty little hanging decorations are easy to make, either from pretty fabric or with some simple embroidery stitches. The book covers the author’s process really well, and makes that process accessible to anyone who is interested in building multi-layered textile projects. Hand-crafted by skilled artisans in Kashmir, Crewel embroidery combines high-quality wool with an age-old technique that results in a unique embossed finish.Beautifully produced, this book focuses on hand embroidery rather than machine, which makes a refreshing change. It’s one in a stack of books that I’ve been planning to share with you for a while, so … here we go! This piece is mounted on acid free 'vintage blue' card and elegently framed in a plain wooden box frame, ready for display. I really do love this book, which I received for review, and can't wait to try some of the techniques. Two complete projects walk you through every embroider process, from initial inspirations through to completed artwork, allowing you to pick up all the skills and techniques needed to complete a hand-stitched, low relief panel.
