Findeizen, Nikolai (2008). History of Music in Russia from Antiquity to 1800, Vol. 1: From Antiquity to the Beginning of the Eighteenth Century. Indiana University Press. p.201. ISBN 978-0-253-02637-8. In November 2016 Michael Morpurgo won the J M Barrie Award for his contribution to children’s literature. This award is given every year by Action for Children’s Arts to a “children’s arts practitioner” whose lifetime’s work has delighted children and will stand the test of time. The Dancing Bear’ is a short story about an elderly teacher, who watches a young girl adopt a bear cub into her family and build a beautiful friendship with it as they grow up together. Roxanne, the young girl, fights to keep her bear living in their country town as he grows larger. As she ages into a woman, Roxanne visits her bear less and less, he becomes desolate and less responsive in her absence. A film crew then arrives, wishing to use the town and the bear in their music video. The quiet, country town is suddenly turned into a set, the people into extras and Roxanne has to decide whether she will leave to pursue her talents or stay with her friends and family. I enjoyed the book, but I thought that the end was too sad. I liked Tiny the best because he reminded me of my friend. I would recommend it to older children. It was too sad for a 7-year-old.

I really liked this book even though it was sad at the end and made me cry. I think everyone should.read it. The narration was really relaxing to listen to though the story itself was quite sombre. My main issue with this book is the ending. I feel that the author wanted to make it sad so made something happen really abruptly but I felt that it didn't have the emotional impact that it should have had. my Son asked me this tonight at bed time. Its a Snail, his response was ” what?? ” . i read book about snails and they are very interesting actually. can change sex, have square teeth etc The Joanna Newsom song “Monkey & Bear” concerns a bear named Ursala who is deceived by the Monkey into dancing for children.

This book was amazing, and I could not stop reading it. It was about a community in a village participating in a film. One of the main characters, who was my favorite, was the dancing bear and he played a huge role in the film. However, there were a few situations in the story where it would turn out to be dull. Nevertheless, I would recommend this book. Forced to work from home during the pandemic, missing an outlet for social opportunities and some escapism; realising that time is indeed finite, the product manager who was involved in one of Australia's most successful startups decided to take a huge risk, get out from behind his desk and shake up the small suburb of Wentworth Point and create that local. The Dancing Bear by Michael Morpurgo, tells the delicate story of an orphan called Roxanne who adopts an abandoned bear cub. The story is told from the perspective of Roxanne’s school teacher. The book is set in an isolated, mountainous village. The whole village allows Roxanne to adopt the bear, as they hope it will bring a financial profit to the village in the future. This hope is fulfilled when a TV crew come to the village, looking for a dancing bear to be in their new music video. But the video ends up featuring the bear and Roxanne. She is offered a chance of fame and luxury and leaves her sheltered life behind and her precious bear. The bear dies from heart break the next morning and the book ends. This book is narrated through the eyes of the villages local teacher. He explains how a small bear came down from the mountains and changed things forever.Morpurgo added: “Storymakers and storytellers like Barrie, and like all the previous winners of this award, have given us the hope and faith children need, we need, to keep flying, have sustained us through dark and troubled times, have banished doubt. To touch the lives of children, to witness their listening and reading silence, is reward enough in itself. This is simply the icing on the cake.” Many of Michael’s books look at the amazing relationships between humans and animals, and the role they can play in shaping people’s life stories. Many are inspired by real-life events. Did you know that Michael’s favourite animal is the elephant?

Ooh my son really loves animals so I’ll have to show him these books! His favourite animal is a tortoise. This was an interesting story and we didn’t want to believe that Roxanne would ever leave Bruno. I suppose we are used to cats and dogs, smaller animals which you can take with you if you move house or go on holiday. A bear is a different creature and we were both a bit upset how the story ended! I don’t want to give what happens to Roxanne and Bruno but we would totally recommend this book if you love animals and a great story. If you want to read this book then I have a couple of activity sheets which will help you explore the story. i think the book was ok, but it was fiction and it had a sad ending. I enjoyed the bear the most as it is quite cute. (I am a boy)David Wood, chair of Action for Children’s Arts, said Morpurgo is “one of our greatest storytellers”. If I was to recommend it to someone it would be to any age of people like a Child or a teenager who has not yet red it.
