Though at times quite technical, the central premise of the book lies in how art should speak to the culture in which it belongs and the artist should be able to communicate the needs of the contemporary public in his/her oeuvre. All and all, a good quick read, not too boring, some stuff I definitely highlighted/bookmarked and will go back to later. The object is very widely produced, and this production often becomes really chaotic in circumstances when the economics of production have been given no serious study at all. This is a book convincing the public that 'design is art', but not a book informing future designers what makes design that is art.There are lots illustrations in black and white and a smattering of photos reproduced though not on photo paper so they lack detail somewhat. I'm not sure if this was intended for a Western audience, but some of the cultural issues he has with bamboo just aren't that relevant or generalizable to other aspects of design.
