Flexible and reliable, the Brother MFC J5330DW is a powerful, all-in-one inkjet printer built for business. Brother MFC J5330DW

So if you have a couple hundred dollars to spare, rather light them on fire than spend them on this miserable piece of equipment. As a four-in-one MFP, this Brother offering can print, scan, copy and fax like a trooper. And as with most models aimed at the small to medium business it is well-featured, with both Ethernet and Wi-Fi connectivity, the latter of which includes Wi-Fi Direct in case you want to make a wireless connection without involving a router. Connection is via USB, Ethernet and Wi-Fi, with the last of these being the most flexible. As well as providing easy connection for PCs, Macs, iOS and Android devices, it enables the machine to scan to and print from the cloud, independently of any intermediary. There is just one paper tray, so time needs to be taken to swap papers around when switching from A4 to A3 printing.

A3 Colour Inkjet Multi-Function Printer MFC-J5330DW

At around the same price as the Epson, HP’s Officejet Pro 7740 offers a very similar feature set to the Brother, with A3 print but an A4 scanner. With that said, it isn’t eligible for HP’s Instant Ink subscription service, so print costs are higher than they are here. We reserve the right to verify or ask for written proof of a competitors offer before we beat the price.

The bulky size of the Brother MFC-J5330DW makes it awkward for use in homes or offices where space is at a premium. AirPrint enables users to print wirelessly from within applications on Apple devices to AirPrint Compatible Printers connected to a wireless network. You can use your iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad to easily print via Airprint without the need to install drivers or configure the printer queue. Just tap 'print' and select your AirPrint compatible printer, and print!....It's that simple. While it's not a photo printer, I timed MFC-J5330DW's photograph printing prowess, anyway. It printed our two highly detailed and colorful 4-by-6-inch snapshots at an average of 21 seconds. That's 14 seconds slower than the Brother MFC-J6930DW, 12 and 14 seconds faster than the HP 7720 and HP 7740, respectively, and 1 minute 4 seconds faster than the Brother MFC-J5830DW and MFC-J6535DW. Good Overall Output Quality To take advantage of AirPrint, your compatible printer must be connected to the same wireless network as your iOS device or Mac computer. It can print on A3 as well as A4, and the quality of both text and graphics is good. The speed of A4 printing is decent for a printer of this price, and it prints double-sided as standard.

Noise levels from this machine are decent, with a maximum figure of 63dBA measured at 0.5m. As always, the figure peaks when new sheets are being fed. Should I buy the Brother MFC-J5330DW? But when I compare results with those from machines with thermal printheads – such as Canon and HP – text isn’t as sharp and colours aren’t as bright. That’s on plain paper. When printing photos, on each company’s own-brand photo paper, there’s far less difference between Brother and other makes. Colours are bright where they should be and pleasantly pastel in landscapes. Detail is good throughout. On the other hand, the MFC-J5330DW printed impeccable photos for a printer in this class (or any class). When I took the time to use glossy paper and make the right tweaks in the driver, the images that rolled out were of keeper quality. They would perhaps be perfect for a realtor or somebody else who needs quality photos, or maybe even photos of your children or from your vacation.
