About this deal

The top of the range 612GW is top of the range - offering 4k UHD picture quality and all the tech and features you can imagine! So for this review we got our hands their current 412GW model to give our opinion on this GPS-enabled dashcam. Video quality is good across a range of lighting and weather conditions although the audio is a little quiet. Straight out of the box, the Nextbase 412GW comes with a powered, quick release mounting system that can be fitted to the windscreen via a suction cup or an adhesive pad, both included. Originally I bought the rear camera that plugs into the 512, but found this spoilt the resolution of the front camera.

The video quality across a range of lighting conditions is excellent and, while the 140o lens isn’t the widest view on the market, it is more than enough to give a good view of the road. Unfortunately the Series 2 Rear Cameras will not work with any other devices apart from the ones I have listed above. Obviously, it does have the advantage of higher resolution and higher frame rates – but if you just want to protect yourself against bad drivers the 312GW will do the job perfectly, for less money. The manual states that “Protected files will never be deleted” however I found this not to be the case - and this is certainly something users should be aware of. If you upgrade to a Series 2 Camera, there are 3 different Series 2 Rear Cameras that are all compatible with the 322GW, 422GW, 522GW and 622GW. Despite our reservations about this, they work pretty well and LEDs light up when you touch them to help you know where you press. I did not have much luck with the Android app - I was unable to download a video as the connection kept being dropped.

WIFI CONNECTIVITY AND SMARTPHONE APP: The Wi-Fi feature in enables you to download and share video and photo files directly from the dash cam to your phone or tablet. The latter proved the best as it meant the dash cam could sit higher on the windscreen, and there were no worries of the suction cup falling off. I was protecting various different types of footage for this review (driving into sun, driving in heavy rain, twilight, night time etc) and when I came to copy these from the dash cam I only had the 12 most recent protected files from the last 2 days and not the 20 or so I was expecting from a couple of week’s worth of saving files… Now, perhaps my use case isn’t that as an average driver but I’m sure others would be caught out by this false sense of security.I guess I might have a faulty unit as I have another in the rear window of my car and that seems fine. There are various settings on the 412GW as you would expect - these are highlighted below - but it was nice to see after going through them all that their defaults are what I would have chosen anyway. However, even with the latest version, I was unable to update the firmware on the DashCam - it detects there’s an update, tells you to put it into update mode but then still can’t update the firmware. The alternative is a hard-wired wiring set up; hooking the power mount into the ignition circuit and keeping the wires out of sight. I also have a heated front windscreen that can make some detail look a bit blurry - particularly in low light conditions.

Nextbase has refreshed its range of dash cameras with this mid-range 412GW, which replaces the 402G. In use the 412GW is easy to get along with - the display is clear and the overlaid text (date, time, battery, mode etc) are easy to see too.You can use the bundled power cable to attach it to your car’s accessory socket, but as our Ford Focus doesn’t cut power to this when you turn off the ignition, we installed the Nextbase hardwire kit. From a lot of testing it appears that the memory card usage is split in two - half for regular video and half for protected video.
