About this deal

This is one of the more cleverly plotted murder mysteries I have read. Throughout the book the reader is led on numerous trails of who the suspect may be. When the killer is revealed, however, it comes as a bit of a surprise. These two characters in the book are speaking in a first person narrative alternating each chapter. Took me a few chapters to get used to it but I enjoyed the reading style after a bit. After a few chapters I was looking forward to reading Louise's narrative more than Maeve's because it was less boring. Course, after a few chapters, I'd figured out Louise and her plot to frame Gil for the murder of Rebecca.

The Burning by Jane Casey is a 2011 Minotaur publication. I was provided a copy of this book by the publisher and Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. I think the main problem this book has, at least for me, is the very odd alternate points of view. One part of the book is a first person account told by the victim's friend, Louise. The other part of the book is the first person account of the investigation into the murder featuring Maeve Kerrigan, with her partner Rob getting a meatier role further on into the book. Jane Casey knows how to make her characters come to life, as if they are standing right there next to you. I love Maeve Kerrigan, so much light and shade there, a really fascinating character. I adore the way she goes after a case like a dog with a bone, not giving up until the answers are revealed. Maeve Kerrigan is a very likable main character; a woman with ambition, yet, deep down also the desire to be loved. Another sweltering month in Charlotte, another boatload of mysteries past and present for overworked, overstressed forensic anthropologist Temperance Brennan. The book opens with a bunch of young women enjoying a drink-fuelled night out in the capital. And as often happens, there's always one absolutely paralytic - with drastic consequences. Casey gives her readers a sharp taste of danger early on as we accompany the unfortunate Kelly on a terrifying taxi ride. The media is stirring up a right old frenzy and calling this local serial killer The Burning Man. And yes, it's a suitably horrible title and we hear it time and time again throughout the book. Ja vind je ook niet? zei ik opgewekt, alsof ik wat hij zei letterlijk had opgevat. Sam posser raakte nergens opgewonden van, maar hij wist het lab om zijn vingers te winden, ze konden hem daar niet weerstaan.-

My only regret is that I missed book 5, and without realizing it, went ahead and read After the Fire. To make up for my carelessness, I now have The Kill (#5 in the series) heading this way. The number of convincing police officers in crime fiction is a tiny squad but Maeve has the potential to be one of the few female members Daily TelegraphI find Maeve Kerrigan quite the enigma. Usually I can classify principal characters as strong or weak; Tana French's Cassie Maddox & S. J. Bolton's Lacey Flint are strong, admirable & very capable, whatever their personal problems. The alcoholics who pervade Scottish & Scandanavian crime novels seem pathetic and contemptible. Elly Griffiths' Ruth Galloway is a little on the weak side & Sophie Hannah's Simon Waterhouse & Charlie Zailer are so weak they have to lean on each other to keep from collapsing in a heap. Maeve excels in her determination to succeed on Godley's team; she shows a lot of initiative & her insecurities are understandable. But Maeve's deference to her mother - a provincial & bigoted Irish boor - befits a 16 year old, not a mature woman of 28 who has served on the police force for five years. Maeve should make it clear that if her mother wants a relationship with her, Maeve expects her to respect and support her choice of careers. It was also hard to believe that Maeve would live with such a poor excuse for a man as Ian, who seemed more likely to be dating Pippa Middleton - or more accurately, would think he ought to be dating Pippa Middleton, who really seems to prefer men with character. Even after reading all the Maeve Kerrigan series thus far, it is still hard for me to grasp the mystery of her character - strong & decisive sometimes and very weak and vacillating at others. But how do you catch a killer no one has seen? And when so much of the evidence they leave behind has gone up in smoke?
