About this deal

The integration of OptiVibe technology in the midsole minimizes impact and increases responsiveness. This Contagrip outsole, improved from the previous model, offers excellent traction on variable terrain.

Salomon Sense Ride 4 Review (2023) | RunRepeat Cut in half: Salomon Sense Ride 4 Review (2023) | RunRepeat

While I love the fast feeling of a larger drop shoe on the trail, the responsiveness delivered by the Optivibe midsole compensates with noticeable energy return. The traction on the Sense Ride 4 is nearly identical to its predecessor. Featuring 4mm deep diamond-shaped lugs, these shoes do surprisingly well in both mud and gravel, as the lugs are spaced optimally to provide traction when things are loose while still shedding mud admirably. While the EVA cushioning adds to the clunk factor of this shoe, the 8mm of drop keeps runners who strike with the forefoot feeling pretty connected to the terrain. There's a ton of padding in the heel, so heel strikers will be in their element when charging downhill. Over snow, mud, and stream crossings, I had no issues with water entering this shoe through the hydrophobic upper. I also really love the lacing system. It may be a challenge to get the fit perfect for some, but it works well enough and you never need to lace or unlace your shoes ever again which may seem like a simple pleasure but in actuality is a surprising luxury.

Salomon Sense Ride 4 Review: A Most Sensible Upgrade! Salomon Sense Ride 4 Review: A Most Sensible Upgrade!

Just enough cushioning and Optivibe foam to absorb vibrations and decrease muscle fatigue without weighing you down. As mentioned earlier, the upper material and fit have been dialed in ever so slightly, going from being perfect to yet more perfect for my tastes. Those who need a one shoe fits all scenarios, rather than having to spend money on multiple running shoes.. What are your experiences with the Sense Ride line? Do you feel like this version is a big improvement? The Sense Ride 4 immediately delivers a responsive ride with the right amount of cushioning and Optivibe™ foam, without feeling too spongy or too bare. This cushioning is essential for speedy runs as you don't want to feel awkward on your feet. The Optivibe Foam also allows the shoe to absorb vibrations and decrease muscle fatigue without your feet having to take the impact while staying lightweight.

Perhaps the biggest improvement to the Salomon Sense Ride 4 is the inclusion of a full-length Optivibe midsole. Historically, Salomon shoes have provided what shoe geeks would call a “responsive ride,” which means fairly firm. Foam for road running shoes has come a long way, but these technologies haven’t necessarily carried over into trail running shoes due to the sacrifice in protection. This is a small thing, but I also like that in the fully loosened position, the shoe still fits well enough to wear around, and there’s no lace ends dragging on the ground. I found myself just loosening these after a run and lounging in them a bit rather than feeling the need to immediately take them off post-effort. Sense Ride 4 doesn’t weigh you down As with the SR3, the SR4 is not speedy as say the S/Lab Sense or the new Pulsar (I have not tested but our review is here ) or Sense Pro 4 ( RTR review ), I find that my comfort and confidence level in this shoe contribute to a very efficient stride, especially on longer runs with my legs feeling less fatigued over time.

Out of the box, I loved the colorway on this shoe but was concerned about getting the bright white outsole dirty on both the mud and dust that I encounter on a typical Colorado trail run. I had the Sense Ride 3 but didn’t like them. They felt heavy, sluggish, and dull to me, and I ended up returning them after a couple runs. Looking for a new shoe for longer mountain runs and am trying to decide between this and the Cascadia. Any thoughts to help me decide? I tried on the new Salomon’s yesterday and they felt much lighter. I even had to size down ½ size than my normal Salomon Hoka size as they were running big on me. But any thoughts would be appreciated. Without sacrificing durability, Salomon moved to single-layer mesh in the Sense Ride 4 and the difference in flexibility and overall comfort is immediately noticeable. The upper moves better with the foot, breathes better in hot weather, and drains more efficiently when wet. If you’re looking for a competent shoe in rougher terrain, the Salomon Sense Ride 4 is an excellent choice.

Liz: "I do not consider the Sense Ride 4 to be a bouncy, highly responsive shoe. That said, the midsole doesn't feel sluggish in the slightest, and because there isn't much squish there, it feels like the energy I put into the shoe efficiently propels me forward." However, you're never going to get the same level of protection required from a trail runner as you would a heavy-duty hiking shoe. Although they are often heavier and less agile, if you only need a hiking shoe, good options for you could be Nike Air Zoom Wildhorse 6 or Salomon S/Lab Ultra 3. But beware, there is a marginal increase in price with the Nike hiker, and the Salomon shoe is over double the price. SensiFit: SensiFit cradles the foot from the midsole to the lacing system, providing a secure, snug, and virtually customized fit all around the foot. The updated Sense Ride 4 is as comfy and responsive as the Sense Ride 3. The upper effortlessly optimizes your foothold, particularly around the heel, and features a resistant, anti-debris mesh for added protection. Very excited about the Sense Ride 4 – I owned 3 pairs of the previous model. Currently still on my first pair. However, I do intend to run an ultra in them, so I will be buying a fresh pair soon.
