As far as villains go, Lord Loss is evil through and through, creepy, and even I wanted him to leave. The only way to cure him is by winning three out of five simultaneous chess games with the powerfully magical demon master Lord Loss while another person battles his familiars. Despite his cruel nature, Lord Loss is not entirely evil; by the standards of the Demonata he could even be considered a "good guy".Anyway shortly afterwards his parents and sister send him to his grandmother’s while they go on their trip. Lord Loss is not seen until the plane scene where he and his demons start killing people on the plane. While there’s no real depth to the characters or world building and the plot occasionally feels overstretched and bloated (especially towards the end of the series) when Shan tries to take on too much this was still an enjoyable read with some cool suspense (especially at the start), a mostly sharp, well-written plot and great, highly engaging action scenes throughout. If you don't like the ideas of demons, magic, and walking, talking embodiments of evil, you shouldn't read this book.

This is the only occasion on which he has shown genuine care for a mortal, and it is implied that the two may have shared a romantic relationship. Due to the Crux being set up like a chess board, with the white zones being the Demonata's universe and the black zones being the Old Creature's universe, Lord Loss's obsession with chess prepared him for his destiny of becoming the last Demon Master. What I was faced with after only two chapters was some of the most brutal horror and gore I’d read in a while. Lord Loss also considers lying to be beneath him, seeing it as a petty, human trait and knowing that all lies will be uncovered eventually so he sees no need for them. Fourteen months later Grubbs has been caring for Dervish in his zombie-like state, also dealing with the fear that he'll turn into a werewolf.The book repeats the formula of The Saga of Darren Shan and will no doubt be loved by Shan's many fans. From here, life is never the same but Grubbs finds that there is magic that can fight and defeat the demons, if not Lord Loss himself. It was released on DVD and Blu-Ray in February 2010, and is usually available stream on at least one of the major streaming platforms.

He also has the ability to feed on a persons pain, which he needs the way a human needs food and water. During his fight with Grubbs all his arms were severed, but after Grubbs ran away he regrew them using magic. He can also feel some genuine attachment towards others and is genuinely devastated when Juni Swan is killed. If you are a fan of horror stories and don't mind gruesome character deaths, then I recommend this series to you. It was originally serialized in Japan, but English-language omnibus volumes are now on sale in the USA and UK.
