About this deal

They’re not quite getting to murder, but Mira offers up that Debra’s conscience is very flexible, and she will try to observe Eve’s interview with her if she has time. All things considered, however, this isn’t one of the great cases in Dallas’ career – not nearly as absorbing in itself as last year’s Faithless in Death for example, which was both terrific as a mystery/suspense story and as well as just showcasing how uber-competent Eve and her team are.

I was late to the game in reading the “In Death” series … was always putting it off: not even sure why – well, I was sort of sure why. Debra admits she found a room to stay behind in, stole the Tony, got Cela to put her bag into a closet ("Expect, don’t explain. They agree that Lane loves Fitzhugh, although Eve points out that she’s put more than one person behind bars who loved the one they killed. Peabody says if it turns out Rico looked the other way while Vera poisoned Lane’s drink, she will never be able to watch him catch the Christmas-loving heroine when she slips off the stepladder while hanging the shining star on the top of the tree, then go in for the long, slow, kiss, and she resents that. Eve and Peabody go to the Crystal Gardens Theater to arrest Eliza in front of the cast and crew of Upstage. When Lane talks about security for the party, she mentions that they’ve been very careful since Crommell, and Eve lets Lane know that he’s been sent back to serve out his full sentence, that he’s still obsessed with her, but had nothing to do with Brant’s murder. Lane told her to fuck off, that she was just friends with Gary, and if anybody drove her to her death it was Debra. There was a moment there when Peabody was all a flutter about meeting the wife of the man who got murdered that made me want to shake her slightly. We enjoy a robust physical relationship" that won't last, any more than his guest spot relationship, but he is enjoying it for now, and says "she has a biting wit, a towering talent.

Officer Fenton remembered seeing a disguised Eliza Lane come to the building shortly after midnight, leaving thirty minutes later. Roarke says he will check financials on the key players, which he does, and finds nothing out of the ordinary. She expected to go through life alone – she certainly never expected to fall in love and get married to anyone, let alone to an ex-thief turned business mogul. Get the casting right, use the book’s faithfully and I’m damn sure (as Dallas would say) that Nora Roberts would consult and offer guidance on a series that has surpassed the 50 book mark. Peabody runs Debra Bernstein while she and Eve head back to Central; Bernstein has a long and fraudulent history, but mainly non-violent.Roarke is sad to find that Novak and her husband, Malcomb Furrier, are law-abiding, tax-paying citizens. There's a handful that I don't bother listening to again, as they're fairly predictable and not so entertaining.

I used to really enjoy this series but as the series progressed the sameness of the plots did my head in. She had invited media to the party to generate buzz for the revival of Upstage, and Sylvie picks up on that – Eliza has decided to go ahead with the production.

Nearly everyone is straight, cis, and white (there are the odd mentions of different skin tone but you wouldn't know if they had a different culture from how the characters are written or how they relate to the world). Eve figured she used the maid gig to get into Lane’s apartment, and then found a way to stay behind, wait it out, and then changed into a cocktail dress and slipped downstairs for the party. All is right with the world apart from that dratted candy thief who defeats all of Eve's attempts at hiding her chocolate bars. Felt like the author had badly ripped off The Mirror Cracked by Agatha Christie and set it in the future in a really stupid way.

Having Eve’s brilliance shoved down our throats while she begrudges a coffee only goes down with a lavish helping of the colours of the crowd around her. She then cried, begged, went on about how she dedicated her whole life to Rose, and he suggested she try living her own life for a while. Debra said she put a stop to that as soon as she heard, reminding Rose that "you never, ever give anything away, the name of the play was Upstage, and that’s just what that clawing understudy wanted to do. Finally, APA Reo comes in and charges her with the premeditated murders of Brant Fitzhugh and Debra Bernstein, child endangerment and Man Two on Rose Bernstein’s death. Escape Rating B: I was so very grateful to sink into the comfort of yet another absorbing case with Dallas and Roarke that I’m tempted to give this one all the stars because it was absolutely the right book at the right time for this reader, particularly after yesterday’s rant-fest of a book.
