The new Dot also doesn’t do the real-time room tuning of the larger model, nor does it have Dolby Audio processing. Voice isn’t just a strategic initiative for us, it’s part of the fabric of what we do and how we think, which makes Alexa a natural fit for our content. It looks identical to the adult-focused Echo Dot – with a ball shape design first seen in the 4th generation model – but comes in two new colourful design schemes showing a Tiger or Panda on the front. So with those features (and limitations) in mind, the Echo Dot Kids certainly seems like one of the better options if you are considering a smart speaker for your child. The rounded body of the speaker is perfect for the choice of characters: a Tiger (my favourite) and a Panda.

Once it's set up, Alexa can send you Smart Alerts if your Echo device detects the sound of smoke alarms, carbon monoxide alarms, or glass breaking while you re away. The Kids update lets you assign a child’s profile to the speaker, either one you have already from other Kids devices, such as the Fire Tablet HD Kids Edition, or one that you create. One child loves tigers one loves zebras, so one was over the moon one was a little more disappointed.My one wish would be to be able to set a maximum volume per unit that way when they think they can go to their room and crank up their "dance music" there would be a limit to what the rest of the house has to put up with with out having to pull out the app to set the volume or of course having to go to their room and try and get their attention to turn it down. Set-up was super quick and if you pretend to be a child and want to play adult music it doesn't let you. And with multi-room music, you can fill your whole home with music, radio stations, podcasts, and Audible using compatible Echo devices in different rooms.

The LEDs show the time by default, but they can also display the current outside temperature when you ask for it, or show the volume level from one to ten as you adjust it. Household Communications — Gone are the days of shouting up the stairs for the kids to come down to dinner. Your children can play their favourite songs, ask Alexa to read them a story or even set their own alarms or timers. I know that children who already use Night Zookeeper at home or in school will be inspired by it and hopefully it will introduce many new children to the fun of being a Night Zookeeper!

It’s just enough information that it isn’t distracting in a bedroom and it doesn’t come with the added privacy concerns of a smart display that has a camera. And, this update has been rolled out to existing Echo, Echo Dot and Echo Plus speakers, so any of these can be turned into Kids speakers. From here you can set up different profiles for each of your children, inputting their name and age so that the device knows what’s appropriate for your child. Alexa herself has been tuned to better understand children’s voices, for example, and there’s also a selection of bonus features to help the speaker work more effectively for families.Alexa can help you get more out of the things you already love and discover new possibilities you've never imagined. What's more, this smart speaker comes with a pleasant feature that surprised us - it can read the temperature of the room it's in. In addition to using sustainable materials, Echo Dot Kids also has a Low Power Mode* to intelligently conserve energy during periods of inactivity and deliver energy savings over the lifetime of the device. We’ll have to see how well Apple’s more expensive but similarly sized HomePod mini compares when we get a chance to test it.
