About this deal

The author does a commendable job of exploring life in wartime England both from the perspectives of a child separated from her family and a recluse who is a conscientious objector. He is from a well to do family, but has his own ghosts and problems that he's escaping from, not least being a conscientious objector.

In fact he does more, acting with bravery and heroism – just as his namesake does in The Snow Goose – in a novel of tender quiet voices, and grace.Freda is a 12 year old girl evacuated from London during WWII into the country to live with a family there, safe from the bombing. Twelve years old Freda is an evacuee from London sent away for fear of what might be coming soon to the capital. Flatlands has an elegiac, gentle quality, evoking the Wash as “a place between somewhere and nowhere, one of the last wildernesses in England”. I've read that Sue Hubbard-a poet, novelist, and art critic- is revered by top critics and authors in the UK and has been likened to Colm Toibin, Anne Enright, and William Trevor.

The two find each other when caring for an injured goose and together make decisions about their future. The story, beautifully written, is a moving example of human connection against the harrowing backdrop of war and the power of that connection to inspire hope even in one’s darkest moments. A slow moving but thoughtful and empathetic book set in marsh lands of Lincolnshire, starting with the evacuation of children from London at the outbreak of war, of which Freda is one. Sue Hubbard is revered by her peers and her talent has been compared to that of Colm Toibin, William Trevor and Anne Enright. Beautifully-written, and highly evocative of the remote Lincolnshire landscape, the Second World War and the two people whose loneliness brings them together for a life-changing time… Altogether a fine period novel, full of quiet drama and sorrow at loss, cruelty and mortality.
