About this deal

If you look at all the issues, they’re looking at the idea of Death in different contexts, right? Like issue 2 with Bardhan in it is the death of someone you perceive is from a completely different world as compared to you. With Issue 4, which is the one with the Chinese Temple, that one is a death of a certain type of city. In that, I’m commenting on how a lot of Indian society has changed over time. All in all if you’d like to read something that discusses mortality or uses Hinduism in a fun way similar to how Greek and Norse mythology are used in today’s popular culture, then this is a great book. It’s a really good read.

First and foremost, allow me to say that I really liked both the art and the POC representation that this graphic novel brings to the table. The first issue is fairly solid but, once Death immediately decides to about-face on the plan, the story meanders pointlessly until the very end. It’s unexciting reading for the most part and, without giving anything away about that finale, it’s unsatisfying and dripping with vapid New Age sentiment. THE MANY DEATHS OF LAILA STARR is a strange, funny, odd and occasionally morbid comic about death, love, innocence and the human condition. Where I come from, gods are flawed, perhaps more so than people. Life is an endless cycle of trying to get things right, and death? Death is only the beginning,” said Ram V. “Judgments are few and far between and all things are rife with contradictions as they should be. So Filipe Andrade and I would like to welcome readers to this near-future Mumbai, this immensely beautiful mess of human lives where a god must first contend with death…many deaths, before she may begin to understand a thing or two about life.”

‘DCeased: War of the Undead Gods’ preview and story details emerge

When I was growing up in Mumbai, I had friends of different religions and there was never any fear of people coming over to my place, or y’know, I’ve been over to friends’ place for Eid, I’ve been over to friends’ place for Christmas, and there was never any kind of discomfort or a second thought given to it. But I feel like now that has become unnecessarily laden with too much of this kind of need to express your differences that didn’t quite exist in the city that I grew up. And it made me think, and I wanted to find a way of expressing how a city longs for its own past and dies in some ways.

I Wanna Be a Slob,” by Michael Kamison and Steven Arnold, in Too Tough to Die (Birdcage Bottom Books) I'm sure this series would make a lot more sense and have a lot more meaning to me if I were more familiar with the culture and religion of the seeing and characters but I'm a bit lost. Las muchas vidas de Laila Hakim’s Odyssey, Book 1: From Syria to Turkey, by Fabien Toulmé, translation by Hannah Chute (Graphic Mundi/Penn State University Press) DC Comics. Studios.

You’re launching a Detective Comics run in July. What are your Batman touchstones, whether they be creators, texts, or movies? I feel the same way about the work I do on these big characters as well. I do get a lot of fandom reactions. Most of the time, they’re really nice, in that people have really enjoyed the work. Sometimes they are a bit negative because someone expected something and they didn’t get that. But largely all of that is like, “Huh, cool,” and then it’s done. The God of death is out of a job because the boy prophecized to discover the secret to immortality has finally been born. Scorned and jealous, Death goes down to earth, stealing the body of a dead woman named Laila Starr. She attempts to kill the child but finds herself unable to complete the task, instead, obsessing over the boy and re-entering his life intermittently whenever someone close to him dies.

The Many Deaths of Laila Starr #1

James Tynion IV, House of Slaughter, Something Is Killing the Children, Wynd (BOOM! Studios); The Nice House on the Lake, The Joker, Batman, DC Pride 2021 (DC); The Department of Truth (Image); Blue Book, Razorblades (Tiny Onion Studios) With the idea that you're reinventing yourselves with each issue across The Many Deaths of Laila Starr, how challenging and exciting is that creatively? I've always been intrigued by the importance of geography in your storytelling, from Paradiso at Image and These Savage Shores at Vault to your superhero stories like Swamp Thing and Catwoman moving to a new part of Gotham. What is it about that theme you find intriguing and, Filipe, how do you visually bring that to life?
