About this deal

I thoroughly enjoyed this book and learned a lot I didn't know, some of it surprising. For example, I had no idea naked swimming was so common on both sides of the Atlantic in the past. Who am I to judge a children's novel about learning to be comfortable in your own skin and standing up to your bullies? Splash is a delightful children’s book that was such a joy to read. It is filled with inspirational messages as well as being one of the few children’s books that feature a disabled character. From the first recorded dip into what's now the driest spot on earth to the recreational swimmers in your local pool, humans have been getting wet for 10,000 years. And for most of modern history, swimming has caused a ripple that touches us all. But 2020 has been a good year for books about swimming. Bonnie Tsui's Why We Swim is a much slimmer volume than Howard Means comprehensive tome, but while there is some degree of overlap in the material covered the two books are in fact quite complimentary. Also worth noting, where that overlap occurs Means provides much more detail.

While any subject can be developed with a variety of compositional strategies, in most cases, it is not the subject but the composition of the work that gives a painting its originality and appeal. How you compose your painting determines the way people will view it and how they will be affected by it emotionally. This special 20th edition features the best watercolor paintings selected from an international call for entries, along with instructive, insightful commentary on the theme of Creative Compositions and a special gallery of cover art from the past 19 editions.

I really loved this book and I think that whilst the message seemed fairly obvious to me as a grown up, believing in yourself and standing your ground is a very important lesson for children to learn especially with girls. There is more and more pressure put on girls by friends and the media about the importance of our outward appearance, something that Molly struggles with throughout the book as kids around her call her fat. It’s crucial to understand that people come in all shapes and sizes especially athletes, swimmers in particular can be quite muscular as it takes a lot of strength to swim that fast.

Recommend that all non-swimmers, regardless of age, should wear appropriate flotation devices and should be accompanied by a competent adult swimmer. Molly is 11 and will soon be moving on to secondary where she is desperate to fit in. She has four girlfriends that she hangs out with but one of them, her best friend Chloe can sometimes seem more like an enemy than a friend. This is the story of Molly, a Y6 girl with secret ambitions to swim like a champion. Why secret? Because her best friend Chloe says it's babyish...and that Molly is fat.

Aber es gibt auch Aufzeichnungen, dass in Amerika und Afrika früher wieder mit dem Schwimmen angefangen wurde als in Europa. A diverse range of styles and subjects, including still lifes, portraits, city scenes, animals and landscapes An exuberant and sweeping cultural history of the sport and a thoughtful meditation on its possible origins and humankind's larger relationship to water itself...Means takes us on a breezy, easily readable journey across time and space to help us even to begin to understand why we took to the water in the first place and why we still insist on splashing about in it today. A great gift for the swimmer in you or in your life. Family Slide – .All persons age 6 +, Competent swimmers only, 1 adult 16+ and 1 junior 2-5yr old can ride together.

The story was a little cliched and the plot was a little too straightforward for my liking. I could predict the way the story would end but is it such a bad thing? I don't want the protagonist to suffer and lose her confidence! So seeing her take a stand and finally discover her inner strength while being surrounded by people who love her is not only the expected ending but the right one. I don't care how cheesy it is! Six subject-themed chapters explore landscapes, close-ups, animals, urban scenes, still lifes, machines and people Splash is a fresh and relevant narrative that dives into the hugely important theme of body image as well as the transition to secondary school, friendship, parental absence and the benefits of sport. Paralympic gold medallist Claire Cashmore has written her first children’s picture book. The story tells the tale of Claire’s childhood and how she actually hated the water when she was little. It is also about how claire, who was born without a left forearm, never let her disability stand in her way and she made sure she could do everything and anything she wanted to by believing in herself.

Add to this an absent mother who suddenly reappears In Molly’s life, it seems that everything is starting to get so complicated. I live in Malaysia, a country where the majority of the population are Muslim. Most people don't and can't swim, and despite the tropical climate, not many public pools exist. Swimming lessons are uncommon, though there is a strong local competitive swimming scene. In the parts of Splash about swimsuits I couldn't help but think of how the various 'Burkinis' worn by the women in my local pool are so similar to some of the swimsuits from the past. Of course it's not possible to include everything in a book and Means' main focus is Anglo-Saxon (but not uniquely), but I find it interesting how a recent surge in more conservative swimming attire has opened up the world of swimming to so many women who otherwise would never have dared bathe in public, whether in pools or any other bodies of water, and fits with Means' call to make swimming accessible to everyone. All swimmers must wear clean swimwear – cut-off jeans and other improvised costumes are not allowed.
