About this deal

Gilbert said Paramount did not want any stars and wanted unknowns, as films with stars were failing. He did say the film "had a very good cast". [5] You just want to have one DAX in your life. If not IN your life, maybe somewhere else IN. Not to get it wrong, this is not an erotic book. It has many elements of sexual chemistry but that’s irrelevant when you get into the plot. Ok, so so irrelevant. Thomas, Kevin (March 25, 1970). "'Adventurers' Opens on Various Screens". Los Angeles Times. Part IV, p. 19. His 1952 novel, A Stone for Danny Fisher, was adapted into a 1958 motion picture King Creole, which starred Elvis Presley.

Over the years I've lived and worked in London, Exeter, New York and Delaware, and am now living close to where I grew up in Sevenoaks, Kent. Thompson, Howard (March 26, 1970). "Harold Robbins's 'Adventurers' Whoops Across Three Screens". The New York Times. 58. In a surprising twist of fate, both boys end up in the Adventurers Guild, which is charged with protecting their city from magical monsters that live outside the city walls. While an important guild, it's misunderstood and feared by most people. As a young boy, Diogenes Alejandro Xenos (“Dax”) witnesses the brutal rape and murder of his mother and sister by government troops—experiencing the drama of revolution, loss, and tragedy firsthand. He is sent to Europe by the victorious rebel leader to rebuild his country’s diplomatic and financial status post-revolution, and is immediately thrown into the elite environment of Europe’s jet set society of international bankers and diplomats. If it wasn't enough to be thrown into the most dangerous guild of all, the friends being to uncover a conspiracy which could mean the end of their land's existence and many more deaths. So in the Adventurers, we have an epic that spans time and continents. There is sex, intrigue, violence, all wrapped in a solid tapestry of great dialogue and narrative spun by the master of late twentieth century American story telling. Howard Thompson of The New York Times opened his review by stating, "On the screen, 'The Adventurers' turn out to be an even duller bunch of meatballs than they were in Harold Robbins's best-selling novel." [7] Arthur D. Murphy of Variety called it "a classic monument to bad taste ... marked by profligate and squandered production opulence; inferior, imitative and curiously old-hat direction; banal, ludicrous dialog; sub-standard, lifeless and embarrassing acting; cornball music; indulgent, gratuitous and boring violence; and luridly non-erotic sex." [8] Gene Siskel of the Chicago Tribune gave the film 1 star out of 4 and wrote, "'The Adventurers' has nothing to recommend it. It is not erotic. It is not funny. It is violent to the point of obscenity and is as much the story of why film companies are losing millions as it is the story of Harold Robbins' best-selling novel." [9] Without her scrubs on, she looked like a normal person. Her hair was pulled into a low ponytail, with a few strands falling around her face. It wasn’t fair for her to look so cool and put together at 11 p.m. Was she really a vet?

We're experiencing a high volume of enquiries so it may take us As a young boy, Diogenes Alejandro Xenos (“Dax”) witnesses the brutal rape and murder of his mother and sister by government troops—experiencing the drama of revolution, loss, and tragedy firsthand. He is sent to Europe by the victorious rebel leader to rebuild his country’s diplomatic and financial status post-revolution, and is immediately thrown into the elite environment of Europe’s jet set society of international bankers and diplomats. This epic tale of escape from the horrors of a third world regime is one of Harold Robbins' most ambitious novels ever, combining his trademark sensuality with political intrigue, a globe-spanning variety of exotic locales, and themes that never seem to change—political intrigue, greed, power, money, violence, sex and betrayal. From the author of The New York Times #1 best-selling novel The Carpetbaggers comes a tale of violence, sex, betrayal, revenge and intrigue. The Adventurers is a story of revolution and danger in the sultry jungles of South America. a b c d e f "The Adventurers - History". AFI Catalog of Feature Films. American Film Institute . The film stars Bekim Fehmiu, Candice Bergen, Charles Aznavour, Olivia de Havilland, Fernando Rey, Ernest Borgnine, Alan Badel, and Leigh Taylor-Young. The film was the American film debut of Yugoslavian actor Fehmiu and was shot in Europe and parts of South America. It is loosely based on the life of Dominican diplomat and playboy Porfirio Rubirosa. Not only is Dax a character that pops to life, but this is true of the secondary characters as well. Kendall O’Hara has her cats, her best friend is having a baby, and she’s comfortable working as a veterinarian in someone else’s practice. She learned the hard way a long time ago that love isn’t for her and Kendall is content with her lot in life.

I am so tired of series and cliff-hangers, but at 80% through, I was hoping, begging, for there to be a sequel. I can't get enough of these characters, both kids and adults. (I'm happy to report this wasn't a cliff-hanger, not really -- it ended more in a teaser for the next book, which followed an exiting climax). Perfect! The Adventurers Guild is the most dangerous guild in Freestone, one of the last remaining cities. Those who join usually die young, fighting off the monsters that live beyond the wall. So when Zed Kagari, a young sorcerer, is drafted, he's not exactly happy about the situation. His best friend volunteers to join as well, following Zed into the most dangerous adventure of their lifetime. While at the guild they meet Liza, a whip-smart, well-trained noble, and Jett, a brave and kind dwarf. Together the band of recruits must work together to save the city from the dangers lurking outside the walls and within. But while it would be easy to dismiss this story as light reading, there is an undertone, and possibly a warning. The political machinations, the obtaining and losing of power, whether it be political, corporate or personal is intricately told in a plausible manner. Upon my first reading of this book, shortly after it's publication it seemed more a tale of the coming and going of power in a small South American country, not much more. Now, all this time later, I see more in it. After all we've lived through Contragate, Watergate, and the various siblings of same. Joey stared in surprise as she recognized the woman. “Oh hey, you’re the laundromat bag lady!” She said without thinking. The world building and magic system in this novel were really well done. The history of Freestone was clear and complex, yet easily understandable. The magic system is a little more vague, but I was pleased with how it grew throughout the story with so many more branches of magic than were originally introduced. The ending especially leaves so much open regarding how Freestone is to function in the future, and it was a great note to end on. To call The Adventurers great literature would be a misstatement, on the other hand to dismiss it as trash would be inaccurate and unfair. Published in 1966 it captures the "jetsetters" lifestyle with a political and revolutionary twist. The story follows the life and death of Diogenes Alejandro Xenos, and what a life it is. The reader follows "Dax" from the jungles of his native Corteguay (a fictional amalgamation of Latin American countries), to the Executive Boardrooms of Paris, London and New York. Not to mention the bedrooms of various and sundry extremely willing women.
