About this deal

I’ve been wanting to try this for a very long time. @ Victor has written some very nice things about it on Connosr. Thankfully, when I saw him in April I was able to come away with a small 1 oz sample.

Cutty Sark represents the pinnacle of clipper ship design and was one of the fastest ships of its day. Aged 14 years, Cutty Sark started recording remarkably fast passage times, under her Master Richard Woodget, and became the dominant ship in bringing wool from Australia to England. Are these just masks we place on ourselves, providing a very thin and ever shrinking slice of anonymity in the online world? Or are they visual shortcuts to tell the world a little about ourselves? Granted in the case of my Gilbert headshot, it’s a far more handsome facade than I could ever dream to be. While this should just be a review on a high proof blend, it begs the bigger question: Do we often hold a bottle in such high regard we start to lie to ourselves about it?

Heavy duty

Finish: Medium length. Warming, with a reprise of the caramelized sugar notes from the palate. After these fade, there is a suggestion of mint, and very little charcoal and almost no bitterness. If we decide not to exercise or enforce any right or provision of these Terms, such decision shall not constitute a waiver of such right or provision. The Cutty Sark ship, after which the whisky is named, is towed into her final resting place in Greenwich Like people say that dogs reflect their owners, have we switched it around where us, the owners, have become the ones wearing a lead and collar? No kink shaming here.

We may sell, license, transfer, assign or in any other way dispose of the Service (including Members) to any third party without any notification to you, e.g. (but without limitation) in connection with any reorganization, restructuring, merger or sale, or other transfer of assets. Finish: Medium to long on toffee and caramel with hints of cinnamon, salt and smoke. Water lengthens the finish, making it woodier and more drying. There is a very charming story attached to this including bootlegging and all that jazz. Maybe there's some truth in it, who knows, right? But I'm always after the real McCoy. Balance: A smooth, not unpleasant whisky. Not sure I would buy it because I would likely not choose it over the others in my cabinet. But definitely one of the better blends I’ve tried. 22 Neat - First impression - Fruity and very “malt”-like. After sitting in the glass 5 min, however, I get a vegetal note. Reminds me of my Bladnoch 12. The nose on initial hit was very pleasant, 23/25, but now it’s around 19. So I will give it a 21.The ship was named after the famous Robert Burns poem “Tam O’Shanter.” The tale describes Nannie the Witch wearing a Cutty Sark (archaic Scottish term for a nightdress) while chasing her horse-riding victim. The figurehead on the boat depicts Nannie in her revealing nightdress, arm stretched out grabbing the horse by the tail. In the finish, which remains mildly spicy, another shot of citrus fruit and caramel manifests itself. With the addition of 4 drops of water and 5 minutes in the glass, the vegetal smell has subsided a little. The fruitiness has returned a little. At any rate, Cutty Prohibition is bottled at the robust (and unusual, for a blend) strength of 50% ABV, and supposedly has a different blend of grains and malts than the typical Cutty Sark bottle. Some of the components were aged in “American Sherry” barrels, otherwise known as ex-bourbon casks that temporarily held sherry, a practice known as “seasoning”. That’s all we know, because large scotch companies are even less forthcoming about their blends than they are about their single malts. By 1923, one of those bottles being smuggled in was a newly-developed Berry Bros. & Rudd whisky, Cutty Sark. With this foot in the door via their “high quality” blended Scotch, they were already a well-established brand in the States by the end of Prohibition. Despite Glenfiddich’s future planning to dive straight into the new market, Cutty Sark was the first Scotch whisky to sell over a million cases in the US.

This review is of ~10 cc. The sample bottle was full and I do not know when it was opened or decanted. The drawing of the ship which appears on the bottle was drawn by Swedish artist Cael Georg August Wallin and has appeared on the bottle since 1955. He was a marine painter, and it was his most famous work. The Cutty Sark taste is lighter and fresher than many other whiskies, which makes it perfect for mixing, allowing you to experiment with different mixers and flavours. This is also a versatile whisky, making it a great choice to have on-hand in your drinks cabinet ready for entertaining. If you enjoy Cutty Sark, you can also explore our full range of Scotch whisky, which includes Campbeltown, Highland, and Lowland whiskies. From the label: "Cutty Sark Prohibition Edition has been crafted as a salute to the notorious Captain William S. McCoy, who smuggled Cutty Sark blended Scotch whisky into America during the Prohibition era of the 1920s. His impeccable reputation for only dealing in the finest, genuine, and unadulterated liquor- gave rise to Cutty Sark being referred to as 'The Real McCoy'."

Types of whisky

Nose: Opens on malt and a dessert tray of buttercream, toffee, and vanilla wafers. Behind the tray is some salted white bread dough being kneaded on slate. Fruit is here too: green apple and orange rind. Water amplifies the malt and vanilla wafers. The body is fine, the mouth feel is round and almost creamy. It starts of sweet, but immediately a rough and peppery note and a lot of liquorice prop up. The oranges turn very bitter and it has a sour edge that I cannot appreciate. In my opinion, it goes downhill pretty fast. This bottle has just under half left and has been open about two months. It's also reviewed with a few drops of water. On the palate we have thin honey, more peat and spices (cayenne, cumin). Oily mouthfeel (could Springbank be in this?) Butterscotch, with a hint of vanilla. Lemony, more so with water. Fantastic stuff.

There was plenty of drinking on board the original Cutty Sark as well. When the ship set sail for the first time in 1870 the captain’s log reported that there was ‘large amounts of wine, spirits and beer’ on board. Cutty Sark survived storms which ripped its rudder off on two occasions, survived a dismasting in the First World War and a terrible fire in 2007. In the year before the fire, the majority of Cutty Sark’s original fabric had been removed. This meant that, while devastating, the fire was nowhere near as destructive as it could have been. Over 90% of the ship’s hull structure is original to 1869. 9. What was her name changed to? David Lloyd George served as the UK Chancellor of the Exchequer from 1908 to 1915 and Prime Minister from 1916 to 1922. He was a teetotal prohibition advocate who saw alcohol as an impediment to success in World War I. Prohibitionists like him argued that workers in munitions factories were drinking undiluted underaged whisky like water and it was affecting their productivity. This led to fights between the government and the whisky industry over spirits duties, bottling strengths, and the minimum age of whisky.Cutty Sark was built to last for just thirty years but served as a working ship for fifty-two years, a training ship for twenty-two years and has been open to visitors in Maritime Greenwich for sixty years. 5. Why was Cutty Sark built? Whiskybase B.V. is the Dutch private limited liability company, having its statutory seat in Rotterdam, The Netherlands and its office at Zwaanshals 530, 3035 KS Rotterdam, The Netherlands. Whiskybase B.V. is registered with the Dutch Chamber of Commerce under no. 52072819.
