About this deal

Ensure you have a clean, flat surface to work on. This prevents debris from interfering with your print. Lay down some protective paper or a mat to avoid unnecessary mess. If you follow a few basic principles you should be able to prevent ever cutting yourself. The first and most important of these is to cut away from your hands. If you can spend the money, this boxed set has everything you will ever need. Want to save a bit of money? I’d recommend purchasing a few specific individual cutters instead.

Varying Tool Sizes: Different parts of your design may require different tool sizes. It’s beneficial to have a variety of cutting tools on hand to accommodate both large areas and fine details. Scale Test: Experiment with the size of your design. Sometimes a design might look great small but lose impact when scaled up, or vice versa.Sharp tools give you more control and enable you to cut clean lines with less effort. A lot of cheaper tools are not sharp when you buy them, which doesn’t help matters. Tools should be sharpened little and often. Use an oilstone or Japanese wetstone. There is a very long and intense video on sharpening tools on youtube here. Lino printing is a form offine art printmakingwhere the printing plate is cut into lino. Yes, lino as in linoleum, as in the floor covering. The lino is then inked, a piece of paper placed over it, and then run through a printing press or pressure applied by hand to transfer the ink to the paper. The result, alinocut print. Because it's a smooth surface, the lino itself doesn't add texture to the print. Choose a quality paper suitable for lino printing. This often means a paper that’s sturdy yet porous enough to absorb the ink.

If you want to start taking your linocut printmaking more seriously or consider selling your work, you should upgrade to a better brayer. And the best brayers are Japanese hard rubber ink rollers. The two crucial things to remember are that you cut away what you don't want to print, and you need to be careful you don't cut your fingers. As with anything new, start with a simple design and get a feel for the technique first. Plan your design using layers of tracing paper, one for each color, before you start cutting. (Remember the paper color too.) When you've recut the lino, do a test print on a separate sheet of paper to ensure the cut is how you want it, before printing onto your actual prints. Consider starting with a few trial prints on materials like newsprint. This allows for any necessary adjustments to your linocut – always remember that while you can carve away more material, it’s impossible to replace what’s been removed.

For linocut, you want to buy the palm handle carving tools. The rounded handles offer incredible control for delicate edges, but also a comfortable grip for digging out large waste areas. Best Pfeil linoleum cutting tools Photo credit: Pfeil Before embarking on a lino printing project, ensuring that your workspace is clean, organised, and free from dust and debris is paramount. A well-prepared space not only promotes efficiency and precision but also ensures that your prints remain pristine and unblemished. Below are key steps to adequately prepare your work area for lino printing: Layering Prints: If you intend to layer different colours or designs, ensure the previous layer is completely dry before proceeding. Whether your goal is to craft homemade Christmas cards or delve into lino print art, our step-by-step guide for beginners will set you on the right path. Due to its approachable nature, many artists choose lino printing as their introduction to printmaking. You can keep going for however many colors you wish, but the more you use, the more carefully you need to plan. One wrong cut, or one forgotten cut, could ruin the design. Add to this the challenges of ensuring each color is correctly registered (aligned) when you print it and I'm sure you'll begin to see why reduction linocut is also known as suicide printing. However, when things do all workout, the results are tremendously satisfying! Without getting into deep explanations of Pfeil’s naming system (learn more about that in the guide), what I’d recommend starting with is a V cutter, a U cutter, and a wider gouge tool. Depending on the work, you may also want to consider a second V or U cutter.
